140 Attend Sabbath School Leadership Seminar

 

[June 25, 2008]  Vivienne Quarrie, Associate Personal  Ministries Director of the West Indies Union Conference,  conducted a two-day Sabbath School Leadership Seminar for Sabbath School teachers and leaders at the Hillview Seventh-day Adventist Church, Nassau, June 23 and 24, 2008.  More than 140 individuals were all excited about the information shared to help enrich their Sabbath School.

Cayman Islands Conference Session Election Results
[June 20, 2008]  Pastor Eric D. Clarke, Executive Secretary of the of the Bahamas Conference was elected president of the Cayman Islands Conference during the 2nd Quadrennial Session on Thursday, June 19, 2008.  Below is the list of officers chosen thus far during the session.   Cayman Islands Conference consists of 15 churches and a membership of 3,558 (2 Spanish Churches, 1 Filippino Church, 12 English speaking churches).  The population is 46,000.  See website

"Jesus in the Park Gospel Explosion" in Long Island
 
Eleven persons were baptized during the "Jesus in the Park Gospel Explosion" held in Glinton's Long Island, The Bahamas, May 11-31, 2008.  Pastor Keith A. Albury, non-resident district pastor for Long Island, conducted the very first tent crusade in North Long Island.   The members of the Millerton Seventh-day Adventist Church in North Long Island were richly blessed because of the crusade.  They supported the meetings each night and brought visitors and friends.    This was first of its kind evangelistic outreach in North Long Island and the largest baptism to date.  Fifty miles south of Glinton's Long Island is the Steven's Seventh-day Adventist Church, located in settlement of Steven's Long, Island.  Members Steven's Church travelled the long distance to support the meetings.    Members of Millerton Church are currently worshipping in a school building while they are constructing a new sanctuary.  Head elder of Millerton Church, Dudley Lightbourne, was happy for the baptisms because new converts will add new life to the small congregation.  Click on photos to enlarge

Mango Tree Parables Part 1

When Jesus was here on earth, He used the common objects and activities of the time to teach His people lesson of eternal value. Though He is no longer on earth in the flesh, I do believe He still communicates with us through our everyday happenings; we just need to be still for long enough to get the message.

My love for mangoes and God’s sense of humor, made the mango tree an ideal lectern for God to reach me from. Though I never heard a voice from heaven requesting that I remove my shoes, I know without a shade of doubt that this was heavenly coaching. Over the past few weeks I have had several lessons beneath the same mango tree and I do anticipate a few more before the mango season is over.

It was a hot week-day evening, after the rigors of a challenging day. My friend Phil and I had just returned to her home. As we alighted from the car, as if by magic, we both noticed, at the same time, that there was one lonely ripe mango in the tree. You could only slightly begin to imagine my excitement if you understood what the mango season was like in my homeland, way across the Caribbean Sea. At the risk of being consumed by mouthwatering nostalgia, I will only mention that during our mango season, very little cooking occurs, as we often pass each mealtime over dozens of mangoes of all varieties. That said, you can appreciate my animation at the sight of this lone ripe mango. Emmmmm!, all my senses were preparing for this imminent pleasure. The thrill was however short-lived, when we realized that this tantalizing fruit, was way out of our reach. We had no stick long enough to fetch it and climbing was definitely out of the picture for these two ‘ladies’. In the wake of anticipation-turned- despondency, I paced the base of the tree hoping to find some implement that may change our circumstances. That’s when I saw them, first one, then three and eventually fifteen ripe mangoes lying on the ground. I must confess that it was after pleasing my taste buds with two of these succulent delights that I understood the first of my three mango-tree-parables.

Were Jesus visiting me that day, He may have said, “The Kingdom of heaven is likened unto a woman who, when searching for fruits kept her eyes on the one fruit that was inaccessible while ignoring the many provided right at her feet.”

Do you ever find yourself craving, longing, yearning for something that you think will complete your life? Maybe you have prayed for months, even years for this desire to be filled while longingly looking squarely at the answer that you believe to be the only right answer, your answer, that’s out of your reach. Just maybe your mango could be a home, a job, a property, a mate, or even a vacation destination. Friend, I have come to believe the saying “God never closes a door without opening a window”. Didn’t David say, “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart (Ps 37:4.)?

Could it be that you are delaying your own fulfillment by ignoring the provisions that God has already made for you, right at your feet? Why not take a look around right now! This is not an invitation to abandon your dreams and settle for less. On the contrary, whatever God provides is always beyond your wildest expectations. So revisit the opportunities and options you have ignored. The wise King implores us in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. Excavate your present circumstances with the driving confidence

Northern Caribbean University School of Nursing on the Way

[June 12, 2008] The Northern Caribbean University (NCU ) Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing is well on the way toward its historic official opening on August 10, 2008. The much anticipated official opening will take place during the institution’s graduation weekend and has been fast-tracked to facilitate the start of the 2008/2009 academic year in August.

In September 2006, Founder, Canadian mutual fund company AIC and Chairman, National Commercial Bank (NCB), Mr. Michael Lee Chin, donated $142 million to build a world class nursing school which would be named in honour of his mother, Hyacinth Chen. Construction of the new facility commenced in March 2007, and later in January 2008, Lee Chin gave an additional $105 million for the completion, furnishing and equipping of the building. Now, a little more than a year since construction first started, projections indicate that the facilities will be operational by August. Despite the challenges that might occur during the hurricane season, Vice President of Facilities Planning, Admissions & Retention, Dr. Daniel Fider, assures that the school will be ready for the scheduled opening.  At the end of its construction, the Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing will boast state-of-the-art facilities and is expected to accommodate 800 nursing students. According to Dr. Fider, “there will be no other nursing school in the Caribbean such as what we will have here at Northern Caribbean University”.

The newly constructed building will facilitate the relocation of the existing Nursing Department,

 which will now have more offices. In addition, classrooms, nursing labs and an Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) lab will also be housed within the building. Presently, no changes are expected in the nursing curriculum for Fall Semester 2008. However, plans are in place to consider revising the curriculum when a new Director of Nursing arrives in July of this year.

Twenty (20) freshmen entering the Hyacinth Chen School of  Nursing who have been successful in the prescribed exams, will be offered scholarships valued at US$3500 each, dubbed the NCB Foundation/NCU Inaugural Scholarships. Applications may be downloaded from the NCU website.
