Community Services and Health Ministries Exhibition

Excitement filled the air as the blaring horns of trucks announced the approach of the Community Services and Health Ministries Floats to the Exhibition site. The excitement heightened when the floats arrived at the corner of Marathon and Robinson Roads. As the convoy entered the R. M. Bailey Park, site of the Exhibition, members and visitors gathered near the curve of the running track to get a better view of the creatively decorated floats. Each one displayed a unique theme centered around “Building stronger Communities.”.   [ SEE MORE PHOTOS ]

Shortly after the floats arrived, Pastor Basil Sturrup, Community Services director, Pastor Paul Scavella, Health Ministries director, and Dr. Leonard Johnson, president of the Conference, led out in the official opening ceremonies.

As the festive atmosphere unfolded, some fifteen participating churches unveiled the delicious food and down home (island) pastries.  Then came the moment many were awaiting, the Judging of the floats. The team of judges, consisting of Lynda Stubbs, Edward Romer, and others, had a challenging task. When it was all said and done, Hillview Church led the pack in the senior category, and Message of Hope was first place winner in the medium and small church division. A special plaque was awarded to all the other churches for their outstanding effort, especially since they had a short time to prepare for the Exhibition.

There was much concern as to how the Exhibition would succeed with the culmination of another big parade at the park the same afternoon. However, this proved to be a blessing; for it brought scores of persons who would not otherwise have come looking for cool drinks and to taste macaroni without cheese, and attractive meatless meals. Many could not believe their taste buds.
Another highlight of the afternoon was the health booth where some two hundred persons were assessed for glucose, cholesterol, weight and pressure conditions. Additionally a variety of healthful food items were available for the general public for free sampling, along with a grand appearance, for the first time in the Bahamas, of Big Foot the clown.

This year we must say a special thanks to Bahamas Academy for entering the float parade and the booth activities for the very first time. Congratulations!  A regular feature of the exhibition has been the Cat Islanders’ booth. This year they were not to be left behind. Boil corn Cat Island style, and so much more were available.

This activity comes at the beginning of the Ingathering season when we go to the community and ask them to assist us in meeting the social and physical needs of the poor and unfortunate ones here and around the world.

Members, it is our desire that every one of you will use the momentum from Sundays activity to launch your individual ingathering effort. Let this effort be sweet and short.
The funds derived from all community efforts are used to assist with Community Services, Health Ministries and Education initiatives.

We say special thanks to all the churches that came together to make the day a smashing success. Also, many thanks to Javon Wallace who provided great Gospel for the entire occasion. See youl next year! - Paul A. Scavella, Health Ministries Director

Couples who are seeking to start counseling a few weeks before the wedding day may be encouraged to delay the time of the wedding in order to complete eight to ten counseling sessions.
