June to November: A Time
to Take Precautionary Steps!
It is now the first week in June,
and Tropical Storm Arthur has already rushed over the Yucatan Peninsula
leaving life-threatening floods in Belize and Mexico. The second named
system, Bertha, is history. As we listen to the weather reports, we must
hearken and take the appropriate steps to preserve life and property in the
event a storm/hurricane should travel the route of our beautiful land.

Hurricane Preparedness
Our conference is well prepared to mobilize its leaders and members in the
event there is a need for service to the community. Some of our churches are
registered with NEMA as Hurricane Shelters. Our Community Service Leaders
have dedicated themselves to the service of mankind, so let us continue to
pray that they will be fortified with energy and vigor as we face these
fearful months for some in our nation. Let us be encouraged by the Word of
God that says, "He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the
finest of the wheat" (Ps.147 v. 14).
Collectively, we can petition God to
grant us a peaceful season and provide for all of our needs.
The Lord has promised to shield us with His right hand, and yes, He is able;
but He has also given us the mental acumen to make decisions that will prove
helpful in precarious situations. You are encouraged to move with haste and
determination to secure areas of your home, or business that might be
vulnerable to storm conditions; and where possible, help to secure that of a
neighbor who may be in need. Remember, we are our brothers' keepers!
Let us secure the following now so
that we are not caught off guard:
-
While we are facing economically stringent times, always keep at least a
week's supply of grocery in your cupboards (This includes at least seven
gallons of potable water per person).
-
Operable batteries and radio
-
Duct tape, crow bar, sledge hammer, inflatable raft, bleach, fire
extinguisher, matches and butane burner
-
Two weeks' supply of prescription medicine, first aid kit, toilet paper,
eating utensils, manual can opener and candles/flashlights
-
Baby food and diapers
-
Mosquito repellant, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags and directions to a
shelter (in the event you have to evacuate)
Secure these items in a
small suitcase/bag and refresh them at the end of each month. Lastly, should
a storm/hurricane come our way, keep a level head, and do not go outside
during the storm/hurricane.
Keep watching the Logos for
periodic information on the hurricane season. -Pastor Paul Scavella,
ADRA & PARL Director
