President Johnson Lifts Up Jesus at Mid-year Convention

Pastor Leonard Johnson

Under the theme "Signs of Hope," the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists opened Mid-Year Convention 2008 promptly, at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, at the Grant's Town Church, Wellington Street, Nassau, Bahamas. Speaking to a very responsive audience, Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, president of Bahamas Conference, lifted up Jesus as the only hope or solution to the problems we face in the church, the country, the region, and the world. Using Luke 24: 13 - 39 as a scriptural basis for his message, Dr. Johnson explained that when Jesus comes into our lives, He is not only quick to open the scriptures, but He opens our eyes and our minds.

Open Scriptures.  As recorded in the selected passage of scripture, two of the followers of Jesus were on their way from Jerusalem to the little village of Emmaus. While they were discussing the happenings of the weekend, Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Him. In addressing their concerns, He opened the scriptures and explained all that was predicted regarding Him. Dr. Johnson revealed that when we meet Jesus, we will open the scriptures to determine God's plan for our lives. It is in the Bible that we can find the answer to the c\rime and violence problem. It is in the Bible that we can find the answer to our economic problem. It is in the scriptures that we can find the answer to all of the challenges in life.

Open Eyes.  The two followers of Christ were so impressed with what Jesus had revealed to them from the scriptures that they invited Him to spend the night with them. As they sat down to eat, Jesus blessed the food in His unique manner. It was at this point that they recognized Him. Luke 24: 31 says, "And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him." This encounter with Jesus was so meaningful to these two trusting souls that they left their supper and returned to Jerusalem to share with the other disciples all that they had experienced. When we come into contact with Jesus and develop a relationship with Him, He opens our eyes to the truth of His Word. And the truth becomes so important to us that we must share it with others.

Open Minds. While the two perplexed disciples were relating their story to the larger group in Jerusalem, Jesus appeared to back up their story. Terrified and doubting what they were seeing, the disciples were enlightened by their Lord as to what hade been written in the scriptures regarding Him. "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures" (Luke 24: 45). Their minds were now opened, and they could appreciate what He had suffered for them and the entire world. They were poised to tell the resurrection story.
When the scriptures, our eyes, and our minds are opened, we will receive the power to represent the love of Jesus to everyone with whom we come into contact. People who are honest in heart are opening the scriptures; their eyes are being opened, and they are understanding God's truth. As members of His last day church, we must recognize these "signs of hope" and continue to lift up Christ so that many more souls may come to know Him as Lord and Saviour.   Pastor Leonard A. Johnson, President
