Keeping Hope Alive In The Family Islands

For the brethren in the Family islands, keeping in touch with what is happening in the rest of the conference and the world church can be challenging, but those who are serious about preparing for the return of our Saviour are keeping hope alive. And every time the district pastor, a departmental director, or even an interested member from a city church visits these trusting souls, they are encouraged to “keep on keeping on.” The administrators of our Conference are aware of the need for regular communication with and scheduled visits to Family Island districts. Accordingly, they have encouraged the departmental directors to schedule visits to the churches in the Family Islands.
We are pleased that Elder Kenny Deveaux, Stewardship and Trust Director of The Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, has been taking an informative Stewardship Seminar from district to district. Just last week, May 23 to 29, 2007 he was in Crooked Island and Acklins to revive the spirit of Christian Stewardship among the members in our churches. A rain storm forced the cancellation of the Wednesday evening meeting; so the seminar actually started on Thursday evening. It continued Sabbath morning, Sabbath afternoon and concluded Sunday night.

On Sabbath, May 26, Dr. John Carey, pastor for the Crooked Island district, joined Elder Deveaux at the Landrail Point Church for the remainder of the seminar. A significant portion of the seminar was based on Dr. Wendell McMillan’s book on the “Twelve Baskets Principles of Stewardship.” The practical and friendly approach used in the presentations made the seminar a fun activity for the members, and they easily grasped the concepts taught.

Early Tuesday morning, May 29, the Deveaux and Carey team boarded the ferry and took the ten minutes ride to Lovely Bay, Acklins. Although we were unable to contact the local leaders to inform them of our visit, they readily adjusted their schedule and provided a guide to take us to the homes of most of the members. Around 6:00 p.m. we met with the members at the church for about an hour of information, encouragement, fellowship and a short devotion. As we concluded the meeting, it was evident that our visit was appreciated.

The members of the Landrail Point Church as well as the group in Acklins agreed to pray and study their Bibles more to enhance their ability to witness and to prepare themselves for the coming of the Lord. --- Dr. John Carey
