Focus on Bible Conference and Mid-year Convention
Since
we met in our January Convention, we have engaged in a number of activities
to facilitate the spreading of the gospel throughout our territory. As we
give God the glory for the things He has done, we shift our gaze and focus
on the upcoming Bible Conference and Mid-year Convention. Using the theme
"Signs of Hope," the Bahamas Conference will hold its Convention, Symposium,
and Bible Conference from 5:30 Sabbath afternoon, June 21, to Sabbath
evening, June 28, 2008.
At the Symposium, presenters from the community and the church will be
addressing the issue of "Crime and Violence in Our Society." All of us are
affected by this issue, so plan to be at the Hillview Church, this
afternoon, June 21, at 5:30 to hear how to cope with the challenges of the
times. Remember that an informed person is a prepared person.
Bible
Conference
One of the activities that enlightened them and strengthened the
faith of the early Adventists was the Bible conferences that were held at
various locations in the United States. At these intensive study sessions,
many theological and other spiritual issues were discussed and clarified.
Similarly the opportunity is being provided for us in the Bahamas Conference
to study selected topics from the Word of God in a more pointed way. With
the guidance of experienced Adventist scholars, we usually go away from a
Bible conference with a greater understanding of and appreciation for the
Word of God.
This year the person chosen as the main presenter for the conference is an
outstanding teacher, pastor, university professor, author, caring husband
and a father of three adult children. He is Dr. Bertram Melbourne, a
graduate of Andrews University and the main contributor to last quarter's
Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide. You cannot afford to be absent from
this special conference. It begins on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at
the Hillview Church, Tonique Williams-Darling Highway.
Convention Highlights Youth
Mid-Year Convention provides the opportunity for our people to
come together in Christian fellowship and to be inspired by dynamic
preaching. It's a highly spiritual gathering that prompts one to re-examine
his/her relationship with God. This convention is going to highlight the
youth of the church. So often we pay much attention to the negatives of the
young people and overlook the majority of our youth who are doing a lot of
positive things. During this convention, you will see young people involved
in positive activities, and we will be able to give them the recognition
they deserve.
There will be day sessions that
will include devotions at 9:15 a.m., community service projects, seminars,
an evening of games and other activities, as well as baptismal classes for
persons interested in being baptized. Check the Conference web-site for a
schedule of the day sessions. It is crucial that teenagers and young adults
attend these sessions that will be of special benefit to them.
On Wednesday, June 25, Dr. Leonard
A. Johnson will be the keynote speaker for the opening of the convention.
The program will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Grant's Town Church, Wellington
Street. Our special guest for the occasion will be the Minister of State for
Youth and Sports, Mr. Byron Woodside, MP; and the Masterguides and
Pathfinders will form the colour guard. The speakers for Thursday and Friday
evenings will be Pastors Ryan Simpson and Calvin Watkins, respectively.
Pastor Watkins will also speak during the divine service on Sabbath at the
New Bahamas Academy site, Marshall Road.
Hymn
Festival and Awards Ceremony
Beginning at 5:00 Sabbath afternoon, June 28, the convention will
climax with a Hymn Festival and an Awards Ceremony at the Hillview Church.
As we sing to the honour and glory of God, the new believers will be exposed
to many of the favourite hymns in our Church Hymnal, and the older members
will be reminded of their journey of faith. A fitting conclusion to the
convention will be the presentation of awards to local missionary couples
who contributed their time, talents, and treasures to enhance the growth of
the work, especially in the Family Islands.
Let us prepare to participate in all of the activities that have been
planned to draw us closer to our Lord Have a happy Sabbath! - Dr. L. A.

A Salute to Fathers Part II Continued from Last Week
Good Fathers Provide for Family
Fathers should make provisions for the needs of their children –
security; material things like food, clothes and shelter; love; educational
needs; and spiritual guidance. The demands are greater, but our heavenly
Father will provide. Fathers are His hands, feet, eyes and voice to their
offspring.
We salute all fathers, the bread
winners, who provide for their households. Fathers, for the many days of
toil and labor to take care of your family, we thank you! There are some
countries in this world where poverty and starvation face the entire
population. The Lord has blessed us with a measure of material prosperity
here in the Bahamas. Fathers, use your resources wisely and well as you
provide for the needs and some of the wants of your family. The Lord will
bless you and your storehouse in ways you did not expect, for He is the
Great Provider through difficult as well as bountiful times.
We praise all fathers who express love, verbally and non-verbally to their
children. Some fathers may think it is “macho” to be the strong silent type;
but children, especially in their formative years need to feel, and be
confident of their father’s love. Those fathers with tender and caring
hearts will draw their children to them. Affirmation and love foster strong
father-child attachment and vibrant emotional growth in children. When
youngsters mature in the right way socially, this helps them to avoid the
pitfalls of looking for love in all the wrong places.
Christian
Fathers Set Example
We give kudos to all fathers who spend time, quality time, to
develop a bond with their children. In this way Dad becomes their hero. When
problems or questions arise, they will confide in Dad, get his
well-thought-out advice and many times be spared the influence of wicked and
unscrupulous people. A hedge is placed around the family unit, and it
becomes more closely knit. We appreciate all fathers who encourage their
offspring to get a good education. Education and training prepare young
people to face the world and make a living for themselves. However, the
principal thing is wisdom, heavenly wisdom, which the Holy Scriptures
provide – a vital component to a well rounded Christian young person.
We commend all fathers who instill true values in their children. This is
often better “caught” than taught. When parents don’t even realize it,
children are watching their actions closely. Children who adhere to
Christian values will be spared a lot of trouble and heartache in this world
and will be respected for their integrity and high standards.
We honor all fathers who, out of a
genuine relationship with their heavenly Father, introduce their children to
Him and teach them to love Him, trust Him and walk in His ways. When Fathers
“walk the walk” and are like Him, their children see Christ in them and want
to be like Him also. Fathers, who are like Him are real home-builders, and
are the strength of this Church, of this nation and of the world! Fathers,
we love you! God bless you! -Ruth McKinney
