Some Highlights of Mid-year Convention 2008
Every
one who attended the Mid-year Convention or anyone who watched any of the
presentations on TV must agree that it was an uplifting experience. To
inform the members who were not present at any of the meetings or who did
not listen to the broadcasts, and to refresh the minds of the persons who
attended, I present some highlights of the Convention.

- Dynamic Speakers
- Each of the three speakers featured during
the Mid-year Convention presented his message with a unique dynamism
that captured the attention and interest of the listeners. Our
conference president, Dr. Leonard Johnson, set the tone for the
Convention in his opening message on Wednesday night, June 25 at the
Grant's Town Church. Pointed and relevant to the times, his emphasis on
Jesus as the answer to our concerns was accepted by all.
The second speaker, Pastor
Ryan Simpson, Youth Director of the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists, was no less forceful and convincing in his presentations on
Thursday and Friday nights. His personal testimony of how the Lord worked
miracles in his life and that of his brother was very powerful. Also, he
related the story of blind Bartimaeus, recorded in Mark 10: 46 - 52, and he
pointed out that Jesus does not need to know our names, but He wants to know
our needs. Further, three additional points were drawn from the story: (1)
Never allow personal impediments to determine your destiny. (2) Don't let
the crowd shut you up; continue shouting praises to God. (3) When Jesus
stops by you, He will put you in the way.
Although he was mourning the
loss of his brother, Pastor Calvin Watkins, Personal Ministries, Community
Services and Inner City Director for the South Atlantic Conference, USA,
concluded the speaking schedule on Sabbath in a dynamic way. His practical
sermons emphasized the need for us to be relevant in our spiritual journey.
We must recognize the changing times and adjust our approaches accordingly.
The forces of evil that are challenging us today are more
sophisticated than what past generations had to face. We are not dealing
with "grandma's demons."
- Home Missionaries Awarded
- During the closing service Sabbath
afternoon, June 28, six home missionary couples were awarded for their
contribution to the growth of the work in the Family Islands. The
awardees are Andrea and Bernard Linden (now in Acklins, but worked in
several islands), Olga and Amos Flowers (South Andros), Ena and Charles
Miller (South Andros), Margaret and Allen Cleare (Cat Island), Carla and
Warren Rogers (Long Island), and Valinda and Eddie Rolle (Central and
North Andros). Each couple received a plaque expressing appreciation for
unselfish and faithful service given to churches in the Family Islands.
-
- Hymn Festival
- The idea of closing Mid-year Convention
2008 with a Hymn Festival was an excellent one. New members were exposed
to some of the majestic hymns of the church, Youth and adult choirs from
several churches sang old and new songs from our Church Hymnal. And the
audience
had
the opportunity of joining the choirs in singing some of the hymns from
the Church Hymnal that they had never sung before. It was an
exhilarating experience to just sit and listen to the melodious sounds
of blended human voices. One of the treats of the Festival was to hear
the Pathfinder Band play. Under the direction of Bro. Kirk Price, those
young people did us proud.

- Towards a Souls
Culture
- As we reflect on what took place during
Mid-year Convention, it must be remembered that all the programs in
which we are engaged are for one main purpose -soul winning. We are
happy to report that at the end of the Divine Service on Sabbath, ten
precious souls were baptized. This gives us a total of 590 - just 10
short of half of our goal of 1200 for 2008. To God is the
glory!
We believe that evangelism is
the lifeblood of the church. And since evangelism is about soul winning, the
growth of the church is driven by a "souls culture." Whatever we do is done
with souls in mind. The focus of every member and every department of the
church should be "souls." It is our wish that this concept will become a
part of the thinking and doing of the entire conference family. Then soon
our work will be done, and Jesus will come to take us to live with Him.
Have a happy Sabbath!
Congratulations to Dr. Terrel Omar Godfrey Humes,
son of proud parents, Gelitha and Godfrey Humes of the Hillview

Medical Doctor program. Dr. Humes is the receipent of the Dr. Angela
Johnson’s Award for the Most Outstanding Student in Public Health Family
Medicine and the Dr. Mortimer Moxey Award for the Most Outstanding
performance in Community Medicine. Dr. Humes will complete his internship
