Groundbreaking
for New Life SDA Church in Inagua
On Sunday, January 16th, 2005, at 3:00 p.m., songs of praise were heard
coming from a tent that covered Parade Street, in Matthew Town, Inagua, as the
Ground Breaking Ceremony for The New Life Seventh-day Adventist Church was
held. Elder Clement McKinney chaired the program and Pastor W. T. Adderley,
recently assigned as the Pastor for Inagua, preached the sermon entitled "The
Stone, The Pillar, The Church" taken from Genesis 28:16-22. The welcome was
given by Mrs. Mary Cartwright, while Valencia, Faith and Sue sang "Lord We
Lift Our Hands In The Sanctuary." The scripture was read by John Ford Jr.
Elder McKinney related that the property was purchased March 12th,
1963 from Mr. Wilfred Mullings by Pastor R. M. Fernander and Pastor N. E.
Scavella, who negotiated this sale for 150 pounds ($426.00) on behalf of The
Bahamas Mission of Seventh-day Adventist.
In his sermon, Pastor Adderley emphasized that (1) The Stone or rock is a
symbol of Christ and each person has the opportunity to return to or seek a
new life in Jesus Christ, the rock of ages; (2) The Pillar is a monument, a
symbol of the altar of our hearts or minds, and according to Romans 12 we
should seek to be transformed by renewing our minds daily through prayer, the
word of God, and witness for Christ; (3) The church is made up of each person
who accepts Christ as Lord and Savior, for they are called the "Temple of the
Holy Ghost" in 1Cor. 6:19. He urged the listeners to be consecrated to the
Lord every day. Giving various examples in his message of how different
denominations can help each other in ministering to people, Pastor Adderley
also confirmed that Jesus promises to bring His people from all churches
together (St. John 10:16). In conclusion, he gave four reasons for a new
church building in Inagua: (1) a place for people who want to worship God as
Creator on His Sabbath day; (2) a place of refuge for those in sin, trouble,
and disaster needing deliverance; (3) a station for preaching the Gospel of
Jesus Christ, teaching moral values and giving instructions; (4) a health and
community center relieving the poor.
Greetings were given by Mr. Jolston Johnson, the Government’s Administrator
for the District of Inagua. He was followed by Pastor Carl Farquarhson
(Pentecostal Gospel), Pastor Henry White (Methodist), Pastor Andre Farquarhson
(Universal Ministries) and St. Phillip’s Anglican Priest, Colin Humes. Mr.
Richard Ingraham played the Electric Piano and Mr. Cordero Edgecombe sang:
"Jesus, our Undisputed Champion" and "Broken Vessel". Both of them were
awarded music pins as tokens of appreciation. A brief history indicating some
early SDA families such as the Bains, the Darvilles and others, as well as the
many different places used for holding worship services and crusades was
given. The act of ground breaking was done by Pastor Adderley, Elder McKinney,
Mr. Jolston Johnson (Administrator for Inagua) and Mr. George Cartwright. A
love offering was lifted to combine with the Conference’s check of $3,500.00,
representing the first seed of funds for the church building project to lay
the foundation. Light refreshments and fellowship climaxed the event which was
a blessing to all in attendance. - Pastor W. T. Adderley
Offering for Tsunami Victims If you have listened to or watched the
news on television during the last few weeks, you will be aware of the Tsunami
disaster that took place in South East Asia. Through ADRA, the Adventist
Church has been providing assistance to those in the affected areas. We will
continue to help in the rehabilitation effort in the months ahead.
On Sabbath, January 29, 2005, a special offering will be collected in all
Adventist churches in West Indies Union. Every member in the Bahamas
Conference is requested to make a contribution to this effort. Put whatever
you are impressed to give in a tithe envelope and mark it "TSUNAMI RELIEF."
Turn it in during the lifting of the offering on January 29. God bless you
real good.
Puff and Nonsense: A Look at Not-So-Harmless Marijuana During a
recent flight to Australia, I sat beside a bearded, long-haired throwback from
the '60s. So when the subject of legalizing marijuana arose, I expected him to
be a supporter.
I couldn't have been more wrong. "I have extremely strong feelings about
this topic," he told me, his eyes welling and his voice becoming husky. He
then described his son's marijuana-induced schizophrenia and its attendant
horrors. He revealed his own anguish by saying, "I guess parents are never
happier than their unhappiest child. So my wife and I have not had much
happiness for several years."
A few days later I learned more of the story of not-so-harmless
marijuana-from an article in the Sydney Morning Herald (December 13, 2004).
According to a quote cited from the British Medical Journal, "Exposure to
cannabis during adolescence and young adulthood increases the risk of
psychotic symptoms later in life." With the average age of first-time users
now at 16, use by 13-year-olds isn't uncommon.
Ian Hickie, professor of psychiatry at the University of Sydney, stated in
the Herald article that modern imaging techniques show that the brain
continues to develop-mainly in the frontal lobes, where many higher cognitive
functions take place-at least until the early 20s. "The earlier the exposure
to drugs . . . ," said Hickie, "the more likely it is there'll be harm." The
day I discovered the Herald article, I had lunch with a pastor friend. When I
mentioned what I'd read, he said, with evident pain, "That's exactly what
happened to my son."
When it comes to marijuana, the scriptural warning of Proverbs 14:12 (NIV)
couldn't be more apropos: "There is a way that seems right to a man [at least
to far too many], but in the end it leads to death [or a life so diminished
that death might be preferable]." -James Coffin is the senior pastor of
Markham Woods Seventh-day Adventist Church in Longwood, Florida, and director
of the Global Mission Center for Secular/Postmodern Mission
