New Direction - Operation RACE
With
the ringing of the proverbial school bell on Monday morning, September 6,
Bahamas Academy will welcome hundreds of smartly dressed students and
their professional looking teachers. We will welcome them to a crisp and
untried school year in which the pursuit of excellence will be made more
attractive and more rewarding for our students and ourselves.
Notwithstanding this noble aspiration however, there are many attacks
being made on Adventist education. Financial cuts will make our job
tougher but we cannot let that be an excuse to not provide quality
education for our students. Therefore, beginning with the 2004/2005
school year, educators at Bahamas Academy will actively engage in
"Operation RACE:"
-
- Reaching
excellence by Accomplishing
Christ-centered
Education.
Operation RACE is a comprehensive school improvement initiative that will
enable Bahamas Academy to operate at advanced levels of effectiveness. The
ultimate goal is excellence in Adventist education that motivates students,
is relevant and meaningful, and above all, prepares students for life and
heaven.
Using Robert Marzano's synthesis of 35 years of research on effective
schools, teachers and administrators together will identify Bahamas
Academy's strengths and weaknesses, define their vision and core values for
a better school, prioritize strategies for change, and implement a clear
plan for improvement.
A key component of this initiative is teacher study groups, an avenue of
improving student achievement through professional development. Groups of
four to six teachers will work together to study and implement new
curriculum and instructional practices for the benefit of the students.
These study groups will provide a collaborative time for our teachers to
implement and sustain Operation RACE.
To make Operation RACE a reality, every person in the Bahamas Conference
must unite to create a "community of learners." In this learning
community the topic of study for everyone should be how to motivate and
nurture students so that they reach their highest potential. To this end
on-going dialog and training sessions are planned for teachers, parents,
school board members, pastors, church members, and school/conference
administrators.
As is the case with any improvement process, change comes slowly. Tony
Wagner notes that time, even more than money, is the scarcest resource in
the change process. Acknowledging this fact, we have provided time in this
school year's calendar for our teachers to discuss students' needs, assess
their work, and reflect and plan collaboratively. With the help of our
Heavenly Father, the implementation of Operation RACE will place Adventist
Education in the Bahamas at the dawn of the best of times as we participate
in on-going self assessment as a means to school improvement. I know that
through this process, we will deliver the best Adventist education we can
imagine for our children. -Dr. Cheryl R. Rolle, Education Director

Living Faith Women's Ministry Tea Party Under the theme "A
Celebration of Sisterhood" the Living Faith Women's Ministry
department held a tea party on Sunday, August 8th, at the Nassau Beach
Hotel. It was surely an afternoon that will long be remembered. There were
truly a spirit of sisterhood, warmth , laughter and bonding in The Gulf
Stream room, amidst some good girl talk and even a few tears.
Our ladies enjoyed the beautiful pink and lavender decor, fresh floral
bouquets, balloonsgifts and much more. Tracey Munroe from Total
Serenity Spa shared the benefits of pampering ourselves, while Debbie
Zonicle, Women's Ministry leader at Centerville, gave us some good counsel
on mending "The ties that bind us together." What a wonderful
time!
Special thanks to all of the amazing sisters of the Living Faith Church
who showed what team work can do and also to all our friends and new sisters
who joined us in this celebration. God bless you all. This is the beginning
of great things! -A. Musgrove
