The Shadow And The Substance
During the first night of the second week of the Footprints of Jesus Gospel Campaign, Evangelist Glen Samuels spoke on the "Shadow and the Substance." He explained that the sacrificial system was a shadow of things to come. The sacrificial system (the shadow) pointed to Christ who was the true Lamb of God (the substance) that would die for the sins of humankind. Therefore, when Jesus died on the cross, the sacrificial system came to an end. No long do we have to bring sheep, doves, or bulls to church to seek atonement. Christ did it all. John the Baptist confirmed the role of Christ when he said, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world."  Listen to the sermon    with Real Audio

The Ceremonial Laws (sacrificial system) were nailed to the cross, and not the Ten Commandments as some people suggest. Evangelist Samuels said that God expects us to keep His Commandments. But some say you can't keep the Ten Commandments. The truth is you can't keep them in your own strength, but Christ has promised to send his Holy Spirit to give us the power to do his will and to live a godly life. Christ's death on the cross paved the way for us to "come boldly to the throne of grace." The Apostle Paul confirms this when he said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

The evangelist explained further that the sacrifice of Jesus is complete because it takes care of the past, present, and future sins. So, nobody needs to be lost. All we need to do is confess to Him; for he says, "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37). "If we confess our sins, he is faithful an just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). He stated further that "it's not your fault that you were born a sinner, but if you die a sinner, it will be your fault." You don't have to be a slave to sin. You can live right through the power of the Holy Spirit that is available to everyone who asks for it. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by God's Ten Commandment cannot claim to have the Holy Spirit. All we need to do is to trust Jesus. When we trust him, "no weapon that is formed against you will prosper" (Isaiah 54: 17). We can win the battle against sin on our knees. The "Substance" has won the victory for us through His death on the cross. That victory was assured when he rose from the dead. To God be the glory!

The Footprints of Jesus Gospel Campaign will continue under the Big tent each evening, except Mondays and Thursdays, at 7:00 o'clock.

Bethany Breaks Ground  On Sunday, March 28, 2004, the officers and members of the Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church gathered at the new church site, West Ridge Estate, to break ground for their new church complex.   Pastor Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, Conference president, Pastors Michael A. Smith and Leo C. Rolle were among the church leaders participating in the groundbreaking ceremony. After the introductory remarks and welcome, Dr. Leonard Johnson gave a short address that encouraged the members to continue to work together to complete the project. Along with the current pastor, Leo C. Rolle, the first pastor of the Bethany Church, Michael A. Smith, the Senior Elder, Raymond Antonio, and Pendolyn Thompson, Dr. Johnson led out in the groundbreaking. After the ceremony, those in attendance were served light refreshments.

Pastor Keith D. Albury, President of the North Bahamas Mission of Seventh-day Adventists presented warm and cordial greetings to the Pastor, officers and members of the Bethany Church!

Sister Albury and I join you in spirit as you break ground today for the construction of the first phase of your Church Complex on what is no doubt one of the choicest pieces of properties on the island of New Providence. Apart from the beautiful vistas your location will provide you, Bethany will have the distinction of being the first Adventist church to greet visitors and Bahamians as they make their way from the Nassau International Airport on JFK Drive

Additionally, the history of the Bahamas Conference will underscore, that this church, though small in size, is big in vision, courage and determination. Your willingness to think outside the box has set a precedent for property acquisition and a new approach to building churches.

I am pleased to have been involved in the genesis of this project and associated with a group of visionary lay leaders namely Raymond Antonio, Pedro Rolle and Andrew Mcfall, who joined me in inspiring the members of the Bethany Church, the Conference, the Union and the Division to buy into this idea. The road to this point has not been easy, and I praise Almighty God for giving you the courage and perseverance to stay the course. Already, you are beginning to see the fruits of your labor.

It is my prayer that this ground breaking ceremony will inspire each member of Bethany to commit wholeheartedly to the task ahead and rally around Pastor Rolle and the elders as they seek to lead you from the flat lands of Wulff Road to the heights of Bethany Close.

May God continue to bless and keep you as you endeavor to remain to faithful to Him.

Education Corner  So many wonderful things are happening at Bahamas Academy that it's difficult to keep up with it all and keep our faithful readers informed. Let me recap some of our activities for you.

The Elementary Division took part in a Week of Spiritual Emphasis during the week of March 22 - 26. Pastor Paul Scavella was the guest speaker and he did an excellent job. It's not always easy for adults to speak the "children's language", but Pastor Scavella kept it simple, relating stories from the Bible as well as from his personal experiences as a child.

He spent the week talking to the children about choices-decisions that we make every day for good or bad-that can determine whether we end up being saved or lost. At the end of the week, many students indicated their desire to make a choice for Jesus, and on Sabbath, March 27, five students were baptized! We say "to God be the glory" for the opportunities we have at the School to lead children to Christ because this is our true Mission.

The Secondary Division is presently conducting its Week of Prayer with Liebert McBean as the speaker. Each day we are blessed with powerful and solid messages on prayer. We know that the Holy Spirit will continue His work on the hearts of these students as well.

On Friday, March 26, the debating team of the Secondary Division entered the semi-final round for this season, debating a team from Grand Bahama. The moot was: "Be it resolved that parents should be held responsible for the criminal activities of their children." Bahamas Academy argued for the opposition.

After the required rounds of speakers, Bahamas Academy was announced as the WINNER, with a score of 1,015 to 849. Mia Pintard was chosen as Best Speaker. We were privileged to have the presence of the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Miss Veronica Owens, for the last part of the debate and she was highly impressed with our team. Of course, she said she was "blown away" by Mia's rebuttal! We congratulate the team of Mia Pintard, Brehon Davis, and Pedro Rolle for reaching this far. They enter the final round of the debates on April 29. This debate will determine who will be the national champions of the Bahamas and it will be broadcast on TV. We need the entire church membership to mark this date on their calendars so that we can collectively remember these students in prayer on the 29th.

Out of the BAISS track and field events, five students emerged from BA to represent us at the national level last week. They were:  Tess Mullings, Jesse Dean, Ervanna Moss, Durelle Williams, and Antoine Williamson. We are happy to announce that they all did well. However, Tess Mullings (a 7th grader) broke two records in the 75-meter hurdles for junior girls: the BAISS record and the national record. Tess is now the national champion for the 75- meter hurdles in this category!

Our secondary school choir won first place in the National Arts Festival recently. We congratulate them for the wonderful work they are doing in this area. Lynn C. Smith, Principal
