THE LOGOS A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 36, September 8, 2001

Adventists Pledge Their Support to Fire Victims

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is deeply saddened by the recent fire on Bay Street, which has resulted in great loss, displacement and discomfort to thousands of Bahamians of all stations of life. We regret the setback this fire has caused for straw vendors, hair braiders, craftsmen and business individuals, etc. As we recall it was only two years ago in the same month that our country suffered the wrath of Hurricane Floyd, we also remember the resilient nature of our people who rebounded and thus rebuilt their lives, homes, schools, churches and businesses. Consequently, we feel confident that our country shall once again recover from the disastrous event of September 4, 2001.

Furthermore, as a church organization committed to the care of the "entire man," we offer our facilities in counseling headed by Pastor Barrington Brennen, a trained and registered counselor; our Community Services Department under the leadership of Dr. Michael Toote consisting of thousands of Adventist male and female volunteers as well as the Pathfinder Organization under the directorship of Pastor Eric D. Clarke to assist the Government and all concerned in helping the affected and rebuilding one of the historical land marks of our nation - the straw vendors' facility. Additionally, we pledge our financial support as we intend to contribute to the national fire and relief fund. Internally, reports have begun surfacing regarding the support being rendered by local churches to their respective affected members. We applaud the pastors and boards responsible.

This afternoon at 5 o'clock we are inviting all members who were affected by the fire to meet with us at the Centreville SDA Church for a very important meeting.

Finally, we express thanks to almighty God for His grace in sparing all lives. We pray for unity, wisdom and solid planning.

Pastor and Sister Roach Celebrate 40th Wedding Anniversary

On August 29, 1961, Pastor Dr. Hugh A. Roach and Mrs. Olga Roach were joined in Holy Matrimony at the Grant's Town SDA Church. Three special church services were held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their union:

Pastor E. D. Clarke delivered a powerful and timely admonition for all married persons at the Wednesday night service.

Dr. Althea McMillan, Provost for Northern Caribbean. University, flew in from Jamaica, to be the guest speaker at the vesper service on Friday evening. Her message was mainly directed at Seventh-day Adventist women, and encouraged them to emphasize a more caring kind of love in order to enrich their marriages.

Dr. R. E. Williams, former associate pastor at the Centrevillle Church, and now resident in Atlanta, Georgia, preached to a packed Maranatha Church on Sabbath morning.

The message was a soul-stirring one, which culminated with a solemn re-consecration by members and guests for a more dedicated Christian commitment.

The celebrations climaxed with a gala reception/luncheon at the Nassau Marriott Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

On behalf of Pastor and Sister Roach, we wish to express since thanks and appreciation to all who took part in the proceedings and made it a most memorable and enjoyable occasion. Organizing committee members were Mrs. Miriam Knowles, Dr. Willisy Adderley, Mr. Keith Major and Mr. Freeman Duncanson, Chairman.- F. F. Duncanson

SDA Sabbath School Certification Sabbath evening September 1st saw scores of newly certified Sabbath School Teachers walking proudly to the podium to receive their certificates, presented by Pastors Leonard Johnson, John Carey and Sister Emily Rahming. This culminates teachers' training session for the year 2001.

The program was directed and co-ordinated by Pastor Michael D. Toote, Sabbath School Director, assisted by Sisters Emily Rahming and Olga Roach. Presenters, Pastors John Carey, Wilfred Adderley and Leo Rolle, shared on such topics as: The Sabbath School, The Sabbath School Teacher and Guidelines for Visiting former members.

Pastor Toote discussed the many challenges facing the Sabbath School, among them, church growth through small groups, and results from total involvement in Sabbath School units.

From the Primary and Junior Divisions six persons completed the six weeks, training sessions, instructed by Mrs. Emily Rahming. Mrs. Rahming says "that they were faithful in their attendance and fully participated in study of materials and class discussions".

The material covered included the Developmental stages of the primary and junior child; how the church looks at this age group and how this age group looks at the church. Methods of teaching this age group were also presented.

A major activity was the planning and presentation of relevant Division programs to the class by Sisters Pandora Moxey, Iretta Sturrup-Rolle, Donna Sands, and Tamika Perpall. We were grateful for the children who gave up part of their Sabbath afternoon to roleplay in the practical session.

Participants were also required to read two chapters in the book Desire of Ages by Ellen G. White. Class discussions served to further highlight the importance that Jesus has placed on Children and methods He used as the master teacher.

All of the 89 graduates, we are certain, are now better equipped to impart knowledge and to assist in the implementation of new evangelistic strategies in their home churches. Thank you, Pastor Toote, for a job well done. -Glendina Johnson and Emily Rahming
