THE LOGOS

A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 21, May 26, 2001

Bahamas Christian Council Make Courtesy Call The President of the Bahamas Christian Council, Pastor Samuel Green, along with three officers, Pastor J. Carl Rahming, Pastor Arnold Josey and Pastor Lester Cox, called on President K. D. Albury, Administrators and Pastors of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, on Monday, May 21, 2001, at 11:00 a.m.

After a brief tour of the Conference Office, Pastor K. D. Albury welcomed the visitors and thanked them for requesting this meeting with the view of discussing ways in which our two organizations may co-operate and work together on offering and sharing solutions to the many social and community issues facing our nation.

Pastor Green thanked Pastor Albury for his welcome and the opportunity to meet. He said that "The Seventh-day Adventist Church has some of the best preachers in the Bahamas." He further stated that, "Most Christian leaders in the Bahamas have noted the vast contributions of our Church in Evangelism, Education, Welfare and Community Services and Capital Development (especially the Conference Headquarters). This has placed the Adventist Church in the forefront, as the head and not the tail of all Churches in the Bahamas. Referring to the Christian Church as the leading entity in the country, he stressed the Mission of the Council as seeking to involve all Christian Organizations in the fellowship of the Council to address social and national issues with a united voice.

He outlined several goals of the Council. Among these are the following: To have all Churches as full participating members of the Council. 2. To have some of our S.D.A. Pastors more active in the Council, even in leadership positions. On these two points, Pastor Albury asked whether the constitution of the Council permitted a Religious Organization to be a full-participant with a dissenting view, so as not to compromise their unique position. Pastor Green said that the Council as a Co-ordinating body respects all Christian organizations, and that there is place for minority groups without loss of their identity. Copies of The Council's constitution were made available and this subject was left for further study and discussions. 3. The Council seeks to elect various Advisory Boards to co-ordinate programs relative to: Youth, Laymen, Women, Men, etc. Continued on p. 2

Spring Honours Convocation at

B. A. Secondary

True to the hallmark of time, the Bahamas Academy Secondary Honours Convocation commenced at 5:00 p.m. sharp on Sunday, May 20. One hundred and forty-one excited honourees walked expectantly down the centre aisle to their assigned places of honour.

Students, parents and guests were encouraged by the brief remarks brought by the speaker, Mr. T. Milton Lewis, principal of the Carlton Francis Primary School. Mr. Lewis, member of Toastmasters Club 6796, presented tried and tested methods for continued success.

School Board Chairman, Pastor K D. Albury, also congratulated the honourees and their parents and encouraged them in their efforts.

This year's Honours Convocation saw Christa Lowe walk away with the highest G.P.A. in the entire school. Award recipients during the 11/2 hour program included twenty-two students who made the Principal's List, having only A's and B's for each subject for each of the two terms, Christmas and Easter. The highest G.P.A.s in the senior school went to: Tessa Gibbs - 3rd place, Lashay Thompson - 2nd place, and Latoya Miller - 1st place. In the junior school, the 3rd place finish went to Pharez Role, 2nd place to Brehon Davis and 1st place to Christa Lowe.

The best B.J.C. performance went to Shaketra Smith, and the best BGCSE performance went to Robert Roper and Alicia Oliver. The overall student of the year was Shekera Romer. The Science Fair winners were 4th place, Laquita Braynen (won an electronic organizer); 3rd place, Alexas Kemp (won a palm held computer); 2nd place, Annika Major (who won a desktop computer), and 1st place, Russara Bain (won a lap top computer).

Congratulations to all of our honourees and their parents. Continue to do your best, God rewards your effort and so do we. Good luck as you continue your pursuit of excellence, and may God bless you always. -C. Creighton, Teacher BAS

Bahamas Academy Elementary Awards Ceremony

With "Success is a Journey. . .not a Destination" as its theme, Honours Convocation blasted off as a rocket on Thursday, May 10, 2001. Scores of parents, administrators, teachers, students and well-wishers flocked into the Church of God Auditorium to observe and enjoy the evening's proceedings.

Our special guests consisted primarily of conference officials, Pastor K. D. Albury, President, Dr. Leonard Johnson, Executive Secretary, Mr. C. Melvin Lewis, Treasurer, and Pastor Eric D. Clarke, Youth Director

Upon their arrival, students received certificates from their teachers and were honored in areas of good conduct, special effort, school spirit, perfect attendance, honorable mention and most improved.

Immediately following the processional of platform participants, Kaychelle Knowles, a student from 5 Jackman, thrilled the audience with the National Anthem as her fingers skillfully glided on the recorder. Dr. Johnson rendered a powerful invocation, followed by Pastor Albury with welcome and remarks. Mrs. Estherlean C. Ash kindly expressed thanks to all parents and teachers for their fine contribution to Christian education.

Sensational musical selections were provided by two of our first place solists in the National Rts Competition; Lavanda Brown and Darrenique Mortimer who favoured the audience with songs such as "My Help," and "Make His Name Glorious."

Dannia Clarke introduced our speaker for the evening, her father, dynamic and vibrant Pastor

Eric D. Clarke who began his discourse by asking students to repeat the school's theme, which resulted in a resounding response. He then called on four volunteers who thought that they were quite muscular to demonstrate how many push-ups they could do. The boys then demonstrated by trying to complete the number that they said they could have done but very few proved themselves successful. They were congratulated on their bravery and urged "not to give up," Continued on p. 2

Continued from p. 1

4. The Council will roster successful men among our Schools to give 30-40 minute talks on Fatherhood, Business, Achieving Goals and other related subjects, all with the view of helping to restore our young men back into prominence; for women can make good mothers, but they cannot mentor a boy into becoming a man. 5. The Council seeks good representation from The Pathfinders on the Youth Advisory Board as they are the number one youth group in The Bahamas at present. 6. While The Council seeks to highlight Commonality and not differences, questions from our Pastors brought agreement that certain Biblical doctrines of Faith which are in the best interest for the Nation (such as Health/diet) could be discussed in public seminars including representations from a cross-section of Churches. 7. Pastor Green strongly supports the Bible as The Word of God that has the Truth and the Solutions for all of our ills. Jesus Christ is the only means of salvation.

Pastor L.C. Rolle closed the meeting with prayer and a reception followed in the Conference Fellowship room.-Pastor W.T. Adderley

but to keep going at it until they have accomplished their journey to success. Pastor Clarke also reminded our boys and girls that success is really an accomplishment of what is desired or aimed at, an achievement so to speak .

Immediately following Pastor Clarke's final charge to them, Mrs. Hermia Brown, Vice-principal, invited teachers to call the names of honour students from grades K5 to grade six to receive trophies and honor ribbons for having proven themselves by working diligently during the first two terms. Other special awards given included trophies to the top three students from grades one to six, and to students with the highest grade-point averages in the lower and upper divisions.

Lower Division (Grades 1 to 3) - Darnell Johnson 1st place 3L; Myesha Rolle 2nd place 2H; Kenreah Brown 3rd place 3K.

Upper Division (Grades 4 to 6) - Travis Knowles 1st place 6J; Tamara Mackey 2nd place 4T; Letaj Tinker 3rd place 6J.

Mrs. Ash concluded by thanking our energetic and hardworking P.T.A. president, Mrs. Deborah Zonicle, and other executive members with plaques. Mrs. Deborah Zonicle along with Mrs. Betty Tinker, treasurer, thanked and presented Mrs. Deena McPhee and Mrs. Mariana Bethell with special tokens for their unselfish and dedicated contribution in helping to make our gospel concert, held in March, an overwhelming accomplishment.

This year's honors convocation was truly a great success. Hats off to ALL for helping to make our program enjoyable and memorable. Congrats to the honorees!
