PROPOSED INHERITANCE BILL
Each lawyer was given the following points to address briefly: dower, the right of the court to alter or tamper with a person's will after his death, the perception that the bill is anti-family, entitlements, the perception that it appears to elevate women over men and common law marriage.
Interesting points and concerns raised by members included the right of the court to reverse a financial gift to the church given within six months before death or bequeathed by will. Should the surviving spouse or dependent seeks to petition the court on the ground that provisions for him or her are inadequate, the gift may be challenged. Another concern related to dower a member pointed out that in a recent talk show Janet Bostwick, Foreign Minister, is purported to have said that a person married at the time of the bill's passage may retain the dower. However, Michael Barnett took another view -he remarked that "this would not be the case under the new bill" according to his understanding. The proposed bill indicates that the wife inherits the matrimonial home at the time of death and 50% of the estate. Another member wanted to know why the rush in seeking to push forward the bill. The need for legal aid was also cited by a member who asked whether the average person would be helped as lawyer's fees are exorbitant. To avoid tampering with a will after the death of a person, it was suggested by a member that an individual should be made to honour his commitment or responsibility prior to death. Overall, the discussions were lively and well appreciated. As a follow-up, pastors are encouraged to hold local forums and present in summary form the views of members. Following this exercise, the Conference will seek to formulate a response. Editor
HAPPENINGS IN SOUTH ANDROS
A few days before the Bible Seminar, South Andros District invited Miss Idamae Hanna, Dietician of Nassau, Senior Nurse Mrs. Valdamae Rahming, and the staff of Kemp's Bay Clinic in the Bluff to conduct a series of health lectures. They highlighted the need to practise healthy lifestyles. They took the visitors' blood sugar and cholesterol levels and took time to counsel the visitors.
The "Steps To Christ" Bible Seminar conducted under the "Big Tent" in the Bluff complex by Pastor K.m of the seminar was Elder Norwood R. Rahming, assisted by Elders Charles Miller and Amos Flowers. The Adventist community laboured hard among the people.
There were a few situations that should have dampened the spirits of the team members, but they kept on fighting with prayers. At the end of the second baptism, 11 precious souls had been baptized to the Glory and honor of God. Special thanks to the team of workers, the choir and the members who assisted with their transportation in times of crisis.
The Majestic Singers of the Johnson Park SDA Church in Nassau, performed at a concert in Kemp's Bay to raise funds for the Driggs Hill Branch Sabbath School that has just been started. The programme was emceed by Elder Patrick Sands of New Englerston SDA Church. The enthusiasm of the group could be felt in the length and breadth of the island District Pastor K. O. Boateng used the occasion to appeal to Androsians of the Adventist community residing outside of the island to extend their generosity toward revitalizing the Adventist spirit that once permeated the island.
The Majestic Singers were led by Mrs. Elizabeth 'Betty' Lynes and supported by Mrs. Ruth Rahming and all their siblings, their husbands, friends and well-wishers. Supporting these singers were Mr. Domonique Moultrie and Miss Gia Styles of Harmonious Praise singing group. South Andros district of Seventh-day Adventists will forever be grateful. -Pastor K. O. Boateng
