Pathfinders Do It Again
Watching the thousand of young people arrayed in their colourful uniforms parading in the street, was a sight to behold! There were many schools and youth organizations represented on the march.
Undoubtedly, the most organized and disciplined group was our very own Pathfinders. Along the streets many onlookers echoed these sentiments as they commented: "Look at that group! They are very disciplined." "They've been marching for so long and they are still in step and in line." or "This group is the most organized." and "Wow! They even have their leaders and pastors marching."
It was a magnificent sight indeed! For the first time all the administrators of our conference were smartly dressed in their green tailored suits and marched without missing a step. Pastor K. D. Albury, president, Pastor L. A. Johnson, secretary and Elder C. Melvin Lewis, treasurer, handsomely dressed with their stars and stripes, joined Pastor E. Danny Clarke, youth director in their Masterguide regalia. Pastors Michael Smith, Barrington Brennen, Andrew Burrows and Gary C. King were also among the ministers who marched to the finish line.
As the nation look on in admiration and applaud the Pathfinders organization, we pray that they many not just seek to acquire the discipline, organization and skills that we have as Pathfinders, but most importantly may they see JESUS reflected in our lives and come to know Him as their personal Saviour.
Congratulations to all youth Leaders, Pathfinders and Master guide Directors for a job well done. If you missed being a part of this great event, plan to be there next year as we strive to make it bigger and better! -Ann M. Albury
Be More Engaged in the Community Seventh-day Adventist Church President Jan Paulsen has challenged church leaders to help raise the public profile of the Adventist Church, to be more concerned with issues of "every-day life," and to speak a message that resonates with the needs, fears, and dreams of secular people.
The Adventist Church is a part of the world of "mundane pain, suffering, and frustrations, as well as hopes and joys," said Paulsen in his opening address to international church leaders, who met April 18 and 19 for Spring Meeting at the church's world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States.
"It is the world of education, health, and welfare; illness and hunger; equality and diversity; and the world of the environment," he added. "It is the world in which Christ placed us for mission."
Paulsen said the dramatic growth of the Adventist Church over the past decade means the church is no longer "a modest-sized community" that can afford to think and talk largely of internal church issues while making "occasional evangelistic 'excursions' into the secular world."
"The extent to which we are a voice to the public on a variety of issues is in direct proportion to our visibility, our size, and our public interest in the secular society," he said.
Reflecting on the agenda of Spring Meeting, Paulsen said the work of church leaders is driven by a number of mission imperatives: "How do we finish the work? How do we strengthen the bonds which bind us together as a family in Christ? What do we want the coming generation of the Adventist family to look like? And what will be its quality of life?"
"It is our love for the Lord and our sense of mission which drives all these," Paulsen said. Being "preoccupied with mission" is an integral part of the Adventist identity, he added. "Were there ever to come a day when that would no longer be the case, we would have ceased to be useful to God."
Spring Meeting is one of two annual meetings of the Adventist Church's executive committee. During the two-day business meeting, church leaders from around the world consider issues that impact the Adventist Church worldwide, discussing challenges, hearing financial reports, and approving new initiatives. EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION CELEBRATE FIRST ANNIVERSARY
On Sabbath, May 5, 2001 The Bahamas Seventh-day Adventist Educators Association with the support of Dr. John Carey, advisor, worshipped at the New Providence SDA Church during the Divine Service.
In recognition of the Association's first anniversary on April 16, and to help highlight May, as national Teachers' Appreciation month, the organized body thought it appropriate to join in worship as an act of gratitude to God for His blessings in our accomplishments.
Needless to say, educators are the very life of any country, for irrespective of the diversities in lines of service, the source of knowledge, guidance and training have their base embedded in the dedication and commitment of Teachers. It is with this realization that the Educators Association seeks to strengthen and consolidate our efforts for the world at large, and the church in particular.
Upon arriving at the New Providence Church we were convinced that this historical effort, being the first such occasion, chose well its venue. As we walked into the sanctuary we felt the bond of love, energy and excitement that ran like current through the air. The music, warm hugs and the friendly smiles of the congregation, confirmed the words of Mike Murdock, internationally known motivational speaker, when he said, "give another what he cannot find anywhere else, and he will keep returning."
The harmonious musical strains of the children's Choir, the participation of the elders and the cordial welcome to all guests, challenged the response of the president of the association on behalf of its members. Dr. Leon Higgs, president of the College of The Bahamas moved with conviction, publicly expressed his anticipation to be a member of the professional group.
Dr. Leonard Johnson, host pastor, preached a sermon which evidenced that he believed in his product; that of academic excellence and Christian service, under the theme, "Follow Your Dream." In-dept references were made from the life of Joseph, who did not become discouraged, but followed his dream through diligence, confidence and resolution to fulfil his mission. Hi integrity honesty, sincerity and trust worthiness will always be remembered.
Object Lessons were drawn from the accomplishments of Dr. Herbert Thompson, president of Northern Caribbean University, Dr. Leon Higgs , president of COB and Mr. Winston Symonette who led the Bahamas Academy Secondary School Basketball team to victory. The youth of the church were challenged to focus on their dreams and help to "make a difference," for the Lord who was with Joseph can be with anyone who develops a personal relationship with Jesus.
The service ended in a superlative of praise, and a resolution to excel in all dimensions of life, knowing that our future begins with what is in our hands today. -Pansy Hamilton-Brown
