THE LOGOS

A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 18, May 5, 2001

Bahamian Weekend at NCU The islands of The Bahamas are rich and diverse. Each has its own distinctive appeal although there are few times when one can feel the rustic ambience of the islands in the more remote sections of Nassau. Rare it is, however, to enjoy the 'down home' flavour of the Bahamas in a totally different country. The Bahamian students at Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica experienced this phenomenon during the recent Bahamas Conference Weekend held at the University from April 27-28.

Bahamas Conference Weekend is an annual event sponsored by the Conference to provide the Bahamian students studying at the University with an opportunity to interact with Conference leaders. Each year at this time the Bahamians, Bermudans and Caymanians as members of the BBC Club lead the University in worship and present their respective cultures to the university family. Bahamian Weekend is an event that is not only anticipated by the Bahamian students awaiting packages from home, but by the University members at large who look forward to the quality programmes that the Bahamian club is recognized for. This year Pastor and Mrs. Keith Albury, Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Johnson and Pastor Wilfred Adderley were among the delegation of visiting pastors who traveled to Jamaica for the event.

Dr. Johnson began the weekend with a very inspiring vespers sermon entitled "Faith that Endures." He charged the young people to be counted among those who are "blessed for having believed although they have not seen." Sabbath School presented an innovative interpretation of the week's lesson, portraying the daily scenarios in a contemporary light to promote deeper understanding and application. The Divine Hour featured Pastor Albury's thought- provoking discourse on "The Transcendence of God." The congregation sat rapt as they contemplated the Mystery that is a universal and yet personal God. They were comforted by the fact that God's infinity is coupled with His humility to produce a Deity that can send lightning bolts and care for the sparrows, all with the same powerfully gentle hand. The theme of Transcendence continued into the AY Hour when a group of young people presented a drama entitled "Help Wanted"- a story of a young man's quest to fill the void of loneliness and despair. The group presented Christ as the only candidate qualified to perform the role of Comforter in our lives despite our constant struggle to find solace in worldly things. A young man eventually rejects the use of drugs and other destructive behaviours in favour of establishing a meaningful relationship with Christ.

An unprecedented amalgamation of the divine and cultural, the proceedings of Bahamas Conference Weekend were co-ordinated by the university Provost, Dr. Althea McMillan, with the assistance of fellow Bahamians Melanie Hutcheson, Tamica Thompson, Tamika Rolle, Mpela Sawyer and Demetria Taylor. M. Hutcheson

WOMEN'S AND CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES WEEKEND CELEBRATED

The hour glass that was running low for weeks finally became empty when melodious strains of music echoed through the halls of the Centreville Church on Friday evening, April 27th, at 8 o'clock, marking the beginning of a never-to-be-forgotten weekend in the lives of the women of this great conference. Having been warmly welcomed by resident Pastor M. D. Toote, we felt quite at home at this historic church.

Our Union Women's and Children's Ministries Director, Sister Iris Henry, delivered soul-searching and easy-to-be-understood messages, - encouraging participants to develop a close relationship with Christ through the avenues of prayer and consecration, taking time to know Him through the study of His Word and through fellowship with others of like precious faith.

On Saturday evening, the Fellowship Hall of the Good News Church was a beehive of activities as our ladies came together for social interaction. We seized the opportunity to meet and greet one another in an environment that only Sister Roceta Miller and her team could put together. The surroundings were conducive for the occasion as we reflected on the words of the Master when He said to his disciples, "Come ye yourselves apart and rest awhile." Each of our churches took responsibility for the provisions of the evening, and food was available in abundance.

Sister Rowena Smith, Children's Ministries Director, took center stage as she was responsible for "Fun Time," in which everyone enjoyed laughter in a wholesome environment. Many ladies went away with tokens of this occasion.

Sunday morning early, we found ourselves at the Berea Church to sit again at the feet of our Union director, Mrs. Henry, as she poke to us on a subject of vital importance - "Communication in the Family." Many homes are being destroyed because of the lack of this important component. She defined what communication is really all about, as well as the many forms through which communication is practised, i.e., verbal, non-verbal, etc.

Our ladies got new insights into the various types of communication being used as well as the many barriers there are to effective communication and proffered avenues through which these barriers could be overcome.

We thank God for the insights that were shared, and have every confidence that the homes of ladies attending this weekend's activities would never be the same again. To God be the Glory! May God abundantly bless the women who attended these sessions. They now have a responsibility to share their blessings with others so that the coming of Christ could be hastened.-A. Scavella WM Director.
