Bahamas Academy Secondary Excels Again

Congratulations are extended to Robert Roper, a 12th-grade student and Vice-president of the Drama and Poetry club at Bahamas Academy Secondary School. Robert placed first in the Secondary School category of the First Annual Literary Contest sponsored by Deco Marketing and Ministry of Local Government, Sports and Culture. The theme of the competition was "I'm Okay - You're Okay." The finals were held on Wednesday, March 22, at Government House under the auspices of His Excellency, Sir Orville Turnquest, Governor General and U.S. Ambassador Arthur Schechter.

The finalists read their poems to a packed audience of supporters and well -wishers who reflected on the experiences and feelings so aptly articulated in the free-verse renditions and original perceptions of each contestant. From among such stiff competition, it is indeed noteworthy that Robert emerged number one. Hats off to Robert for a job well done and to Mr. Julien who worked with him. Echoing the sentiments of Mrs. Deon Seymour-Cox, administrator of the competition, we believe the Bahamas is indeed assured that all is not lost with our youth. Rather, insightful and artful interpretations confirm that the youth of today are conscious, well-intended and industrious citizens who are committed to self- improvement and nation-building.

Robert was awarded a scholarship of $4,000 to the college of his choice. Congrats, Robert, for a job well done. May God continue to bless you.

BEER BETTER THAN MILK? "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" SAYS CHURCH HEALTH LEADER

The campaign by animal rights activists to persuade students to drink beer instead of milk presents "misleading information," according to a health spokesman for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The campaign brought criticism from many organizations for its pro-beer stance (refer to March 21 ANN Bulletin). "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" (PETA), who launched the "Got Beer?" promotion, now states that it is "pulling campaign materials from college campuses," but its website still promotes "why beer is better."

"To suggest beer is better is ludicrous," comments Seventh-day Adventist health expert Stoy Proctor. "Their nutritional comparison presents misleading information in their attempt to promote their campaign against milk, since in their analysis they leave out information on vitamin and mineral content. Milk's most important contribution to the diet is that it is rich in Vitamins B2, B12 and calcium-nutrients that beer totally lacks. While certain aspects of comparison are of course true-milk has more fat than beer, for example-the major point about beer's alcohol content is completely ignored. That's irresponsible, because it avoids the primary reason for not drinking beer-the damage that alcohol causes."

PETA's website now includes the disclaimer about the nutritional comparison that "while all this is true, PETA recommends fresh juices, soy milk, and mineral water-even soda-over milk or beer."

"One wonders why they didn't say this in the first place," comments Proctor. "To promote beer-drinking as a substitute for milk was surely not necessary as part of their argument."

Seventh-day Adventists promote a healthy lifestyle that highlights the importance of a good diet and the avoidance of alcoholic drinks.

WHAT TO PRAY FOR

"We can approach God with confidence for this reason: if we make requests which accord with His will He listens to us; and if we know that our request are heard, we know also that the things we asked for are ours." 1 John 5:14, NEB

Let not anybody who only half believes God's promises expect to receive anything of the Lord. Every precious promise is a pledge by God. Let us honor Him by believing His Word.. Ifs, buts, perhapses or maybes cannot be answered. Only positive faith will unlock the treasure house of heaven.

Let us ask anything God has promised with confidence during our intense devotional prayer time, and God will give us His Holy Spirit; and when He comes, we will have His wisdom, discernment, efficiency and overcoming power: He is our present and instant help in every time of need. -Mr. & Mrs. Tibor Shelly, Communion With God, p.20
