THE LOGOS

A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 23, June 9, 2001

Mission To Cuba On May 31, 2001, a group of pastors and their wives led by Pastor K. D. Albury President and other administrators and in particular, Leo C. Rolle (Ministerial Director), embarked on a mission trip to the Republic of Cuba. On arrival we were greeted at the airport by Elder Daniel Fontaine Marquez , President of the Cuban Union of Seventh-day Adventists who conveyed a warm welcome and expressed his gratitude to our conference leaders for choosing to assist with spreading the gospel on that island.

Although our Cuban brothers were not always fortunate to have the freedom of worship we enjoy in the Bahamas, God has blessed the work there tremendously. Today, there are over 25,000 Seventh-day Adventists throughout that island effectively carrying the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, missions offering from the world church, and the assistance of the Maranatha building teams, there is a seminary in Havana, where young men and women are trained for full-time ministry. There is a printing press in the Union Office to assist with the distribution of Christian literature to church members and citizens, and many church buildings are being erected to the honor and glory of God across the green landscape of that great island.

On Sabbath morning pastors Albury, Johnson and Rolle presented powerful sermons that lifted the spirits of the Cuban brethren. With the assistance of interpreters, these preachers of righteousness unfolded precious truths that reassured the faith of the believers and convicted the hearts of the congregation. Pastors in the delegation performed various functions in the Sabbath services. After being fed with spiritual food, we partook of a scrumptious meal provided by the staff at the seminary's cafeteria. During the A. Y. hour we experienced a banquet of music provided by numerous choirs, groups and soloists. It was a glorious experience. Harmony rang from the lips of those who ministered to us Sabbath afternoon.

In spite of a language barrier, we were able to connect by the smiles and sincere expressions; their faces allowed us to share in each musical selection. The Bahamian shepherdesses also blessed the program with their rendition of "Redemption Draweth Nigh". Each item on the program initiated a thunderous amen but the highlight for the Cuban brethren was when the pastors of the Bahamas Conference sang their theme song "Going Afar".

On Sunday afternoon Pastor Keith D. Albury made a presentation to our Cuban brothers and sisters on behalf of Bahamas

ADVENTIST MEN LEND HELPING HAND DURING HOLIDAY

Giving God thanks for his many blessings, nine men from the Hillview Adventist Men's Society visited the brethren of the Lowe Sound SDA Church in North Andros from Thursday, May 31, to June 4, 2001.

Dedicated to using their entrepreneurial skills to the honour of God, skilled crafts men:- Elders Clement Maycock, Henry Moncur, Rufus Polhemus, Alston Rolle, Bro. Joshua Smith, Bro. Leslie Brown, Bro. Rudolph Fowler, Bro. Hepburn, and Bro. Derek Fowler, immediately got to the task of helping the Lowe Sound brethren with their building program from 7 p.m. to 11 o'clock

At sunrise the nine-man-band was back on the job. After a hearty breakfast they devoted the entire day to work at the church. Elder Maycock wishes to thank the ladies of the church who supplied them with 'good ole Andros food.'

Sabbath hours were spent in fellowshipping with the brethren of North Andros, Elder Henry Moncur had the privilege of dedicating a baby to the Lord. Sister Rowena Smith, Children's Ministry Leader for the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, accompanied her husband, Bro. Joshua Smith, to North Andros. Sis. Smith used the time to interact and share God's love with the children of Lowe Sound Church. Parents and children were greatly encouraged by her visit.

At set of sun the work resumed and lasted late into the night. Each hour was used effectively to give much needed labour to the church as was humanly possible. Elder Maycock is happy to report that their ministry has impacted and has left the church building program much improved.

District Pastor John Carey, who was away in Cuba, extends along with Elders L. Russell and Evans a special thank you to the nine-man-band and Sister Smith for their labour of love to the church. Dr. Carey says "you have the keys to the church. Do come over and help us as often as your schedule allows." -M. E. Knott

Accepting the gifts was Elder Fontaine (President, Cuban Union). This moment will last a long time in the hearts of those present.

Many of the Pastors made personal donations to other mission projects and Pastor Albury laid the foundation for future programs such as:- an exchange program between ministers and the possibility of training some of our ministers at the seminary in Cuba. The entire delegation wishes to thank Pastor Gary King for translating for us, and for playing a key role in the planning stages of the trip. Special thanks are also extended to Phil and Jane Antonio, and brother Cyrus Miller and his wife who participated in the weekend's activities.

B. A. ELEMENTARY SCORES IN MATH COMPETITION

Continued from p. 1

Competition which was held in February and May of this year.

Exhibiting dedicated spirit, these students gave up lunch breaks in order to answer questions regarding area, perimeter, quotient as well as solving other challenging Math problems, as coaches Toote and Jackman took them through the paces to ensure that they were well prepared for their competitors.

During the first round of competition held at the E. P. Roberts Primary School on February 22, Bahamas Academy Elementary walked away with first place out of a field of six competitors. The finals were held Thursday, May 24, at the Marriott Crystal Palace. Under the theme Educators: "Holding High The Torch of Excellence," students were well prepared for their fine competitors, despite the fact that they were otherwise busy studying for writing of their GLAT and Final exams. Like the semi-finals, the finals were no easy task, but a case of who could best meet the challenge at hand.

Before announcing the results of the finals, Mr. Creswell Sturrup, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports commended the students for their demeanor and show of confidence. In particular, he applauded them for making problem-solving in math a lively and exciting adventure.

In the final analysis, it was Jordon Prince Williams with 100 points, Bahamas Academy Elementary with 95 points and St. Francis Joseph with 85 points.

Congratulations to the students of Grade 6 whose performance in this year's Primary Principals Association's, Math Competition is a clear Indication that Math can be fun.
