THE LOGOS A Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 6, Number 22, June 2, 2001
|
The Seventh-day Adventist Church serves as the governing body of the school and since its inception, continues to be the force behind its growth. Currently the school has a student population of approximately one hundred and seventy, which is expected to increase during the 2001/2002 academic year, with the introduction of the seventh grade this coming September.
Established in 1980, the Grand Bahama Academy operated from various locations. It was at the local YMCA that the school originally began its classes, before moving to the Seventh-day Adventist Church located on East Beach Way and Gambier Drive. This, however, would only be temporary, as school officials determined to have facilities of their own and worked towards achieving that goal. Thus, in 1998, that dream became a reality with the construction of classrooms at the school's existing location east of Baloa Road on Sandcombe and Torcross Roads.
Recognized as a leading academic institution, the Grand Bahama Academy has excelled in numerous areas, most notably the Grade Level Assessment Test (GLAT), in which the school continues to be rated among the highest for the Grand Bahama community yearly. The Academy boasts a number of after-school activities, which include Computer Lab, Music, Piano, Arts and Crafts, Remedial Reading, Gardening, Sewing and Cooking.
School Fees are affordable due to the fact that the school is subsidized by the church and from Seventh-day Adventists capital development funds.
The current school Board Members for the Grand Bahama Academy are: Pastor Keith D. Albury, President, Bahamas Conference of SDA; Pastor Paul A. Scavella, Chairman of the School Board; Dr. Leonard A. Johnson, Executive Secretary, Bahamas Conference of SDA; Dr. John Carey, Education Director, Bahamas Conference of SDA; Mr. C,. Melvin Lewis, Treasurer, Bahamas Conference of SDA; Mr. Haydn Hanna, Principal, Grand Bahama Academy; Pastor Errol B. Tinker, Pastor Ricardo Bain, Mrs. Carleta Carolina, Mr. Anthony Ferguson, Mr. Prophet Apply, Mr. Stephen Burrows, Mr. Renford Trail and Mrs. Arlene Sands.
The Grand Bahama Academy sits on five acres of land in the rapidly developing Grasmere subdivision. Its current building has large and well-equipped classrooms of over 700 sq.ft. each and there are 12 adjoining acres of land earmarked for future expansion. Students from all denominations are welcomed.
IVY HUMES WEEK CELEBRATED AT BAHAMAS ACADEMY ELEMENTARY
May 14 to 18, 2001, will long be remembered at Bahamas Academy Elementary as we celebrated Ivy Humes Week.
On Monday, we started off with a Prayer Breakfast during which Pastor Jeremiah Duncombe told Mrs. Humes that she was beginning a new phase in her life and she was to give birth to new things.
On Tuesday morning, the gym was exquisitely decorated for a queen. At 9 a.m., Mrs. Humes, escorted by her dashing husband, Mr. Randolph Humes, walked down the aisle on a red carpet to the delight of the students, staff and friends. Pastor H. A. Roach spoke and told Mrs. Humes about being a part of the 'Ivy League.' Former and present students showered Mrs. Humes with words and gifts of their appreciation.
Wednesday and Thursday were no different as staff and colleagues gave her gifts of their love and appreciation.
Mrs. Humes, in her response on Thursday afternoon at a luncheon held in her honour, said that she did not expect the week to have been as it was and was grateful for all the love and appreciation showed her.
Thanks to the members of the social and decoration committees, staff, parents, family and friends for making this week memorable. - Josette Forbes, Teacher BAE
NORTHERN REGION OF BAHAMAS CONFERENCE OF SDA
Seventh-day Adventists on Grand Bahama Island were among those who turned out to the grounds of the International Bazaar on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at 7:30 p.m. to support the AIDS Awareness Committee's annual Candlelight ceremony.
During this time, the members remembered those who have died from the disease and recommitted themselves to continue to encourage AIDS victims in the community.
The guest speaker was Pastor Paul Scavella, the Health Director for the Conference as well as the Field Secretary for the Northern Region of Seventh-day Adventists.
Pastor Scavella reminded the crowd that AIDS is getting closer to us through family, friends and innocent victims, but we can lend a hand and reach out in compassion as the "Master" did to lepers. He went on to say that those who are contemplating marriage should be careful and make sure that their future partners are not affected.
Other highlights were the colorful marching Bands from the various organizations including the Pathfinders and the dynamic Freeport Church Youth Choir, directed by Dr. Marvin Smith.-E. Lopez, Communication Secretary FPO

POETRY CORNER BY SHEKERA ROMER
(An Honour Student at Bahamas Academy Secondary)MY God. . .
My God is sovereign and supreme,
And he's always there on my team
He has power, strength, and love,
And he's always there right above.
I love him for sending his beloved son,
For our sakes it was done.
He is one who is always there
And is faithful, caring and always fair.
My God, My God, thank you for me,
And I will serve thee with love and purity.
So let us give thanks for what he has done.
He has helped us to make it far, for the victories we have won.
