Adventists Respond to Terrorist and Fire Crises

Pastor Keith Albury, Conference president, in a statement this week states: "The Seventh-day Adventist Church, like many others in the Bahamas, expresses its solidarity in prayer for those affected by the horrific tragedy, which claimed the lives of thousands in America"

Once again we have been brutally reminded of how fragile our lives are, and how fragile the structures that surround us are. Today with so many questions still unanswered, we can only ask for the prayers of every believer for those who are suffering, for those who have lost loved ones, and for those involved in the rescue efforts. Let us also pray for the world's leaders, who are in need of Divine guidance as they deal with the continued threat of terrorism.

As emergency and rescue teams search for survivors of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, Seventh-day Adventists in the United States and around the world, including the Bahamas, are responding to the unfolding tragedy. "Even in the face of this disaster, we cannot just throw our arms up in despair," said Pastor Jan Paulsen, president of the Adventist world church, at a special meeting Tuesday with staff at the church's world headquarters.

On Thursday, September 13, 2001, the officers of the Seventh-day Adventists church held a meeting with approximately 35 members who are straw vendors along with others who lost their goods and means of livelihood during the recent disaster on Bay Street, Nassau. At this meeting, President Keith Albury, reiterated expressions of support and solidarity in prayer for those whose lives have been displaced by this tragedy.

Pastor Albury applauded the Government for its swift action in addressing the concerns and needs of those affected, and indicated that the Conference has rallied to augment what the Government has done by giving each of its members a cash donation to assist in replacing their goods destroyed by fire.

Reciting the passage of scripture in Galatians 6:10 which says, "Therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers," Pastor Albury indicated that the Church is encouraged to always demonstrate a culture of Christian liberality, especially in regard to those who are of the "Household of faith."

Pastor Albury feels that if all churches were to rally around their members affected by this disaster, by offering spiritual and physical support, with a short space of time many of these individuals can recover what they have lost.

Communicating the Good News of Jesus Christ

The

Communication Department of Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists seeks to share the good news of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, via every possible means of technology, in its attempts to reach all persons, communicating hope.

This day, Sabbath, September 15, affords the department the opportunity to remind all persons of the objectives. As such, we wish to reiterate some of the communication programs within our Conference. These include, the Listen-up program, produced by the Youth Department under the leadership of Pastor Eric D. Clarke, and the Communications Department. The Listen-up Committee consists of Chairman Curtis Bryan, Andria Musgrove, Christopher Hanna, Phyllis Woodside, Samantha Wilson and Divencia LaBrin. The target groups are teenagers and young people in general. With the Theme "Presenting Jesus Christ, The Positive Choice," Listen-up offers positive, exciting alternatives for young people.

Radio programs include Path to Life that is aired on Thursday mornings at 6:30 on ZNS 3, with Pastor Paul A. Scavella as the speaker. The aim is to communicate health and family counseling and address different family life issues.

Family Focus, a local church program which highlights family issues, is aired every 2nd and 4th Sabbath morning on ZNS 1240 at 6:00 o'clock. The programme is sponsored by the New Providence SDA Church, and its pastor, Dr. Leonard A. Johnson is the speaker.

There is also the Voice of Prophecy, the longest running radio program in the Bahamas that comes on ZNS 1540 at 6 o'clock on Sunday evenings.

Three Angels Broadcasting Network is a television network like no other. 3ABN around-the-clock television station sponsored by the Bahamas Conference of SDA, is seen via Cable Bahamas on Channel 57 (New Providence), Channel 53 (Freeport), Channel 44 (Abaco and Eleuthera). 3ABN, with its theme "Mending Broken People," focuses not only on meeting people's spiritual needs, but their physical, mental and emotional needs as well. 3ABN features Christian lifestyle programming devoted to the viewer's total well being. In addition, you would be pleased to know that for 2001, we have had several Sunday evening radio broadcasts from a number of our churches in New Providence. Ephesus SDA Church, as recently as last Sunday, September 9, was on the air courtesy of the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas. Our president, K. D. Albury, has been invited to present morning devotion on November 14, and he will give a message on Sunday, December 16, being the last complimentary program for the Adventists for the year 2001. Stay tuned to the Logos for more information on this service.

Today, doorknob flyers have been circulated to all churches in New Providence for distribution to friends and neighbours, with the aim of sensitizing the nation to the benefits of 3ABN and also to increase its viewership. Similar flyers will be sent to Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera for distribution within the week.

We encourage your positive support and participation in helping the Communication Department to share the good news of Christ, and finally we welcome stories and photographs of local church events. - Communications Director
