Former Prime Minister and Church Brother Dies!

Sir Lynden Pindling, seventy years old, former Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, passed at 12:35 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2000. Present on the occasion were our own Adventist Ministers, Pastors Hugh Roach, Eric Clarke, Michael Smith and Jeremiah Duncombe and two members of the Anglican clergy, Priests Tyrone McKenzie and Patrick Johnson.

In addition, his wife, Lady Pindling, their four children, and other family members were present. He died peacefully in his home on Skyline Drive, Cable Beach, Nassau.

Sir Lynden's death came after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1996. This ailment also had an impact upon his decision to retire from active politics in 1997 after 41 consecutive years in the Bahamian parliament.

A proud moment for Sir Lynden was on December 10, 1996, when he recommitted his life to God and was baptized by Pastor H. A. Roach at the Centreville SDA Church. Since then he attended his home church, the Hillview SDA Church, on a regular basis and visited a number of the local SDA churches in the Bahamas. He will be missed by the entire Bahamas and our Adventist community.

CONDOLENCES ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEATH OF SIR LYNDEN PINDLING The Seventh-day Adventist community joins the rest of the Bahamas in mourning the passing of the Father of our nation, Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling. For us, we also mourn the passing of a brother in Christ who has laid down the burdens of this life and now sleeps in Jesus awaiting the glorious resurrection morning.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Lady Pindling; the children: Obie, Michelle, Leslie, Monique and the grandchildren as they go through this time of bereavement and would like to assure them of our continued prayers and support.

TEACHERS ATTEND SEMI NAR

Under the theme "Prepared For Service In Today's School," teachers of the Bahamas Conference of S.D.A. schools attended a pre-school seminar August 21 and 22, 2000, at the Bahamas Academy Auditorium. Dr. M. D. Toote, Sabbath School and Lay Activities Director of the Conference, set the tone for the first day of the seminar with a dynamic and inspirational devotional message. The Youth Director of the Conference, Pastor E. D. Clarke, maintained the level of dynamism and inspiration during the last day's devotion. The devotional messages reminded teachers that the school and the church are one in purpose.

In his motivational presentation, Mr. P. Samuel Bain, Vice-President of Success Training College, challenged the teachers to model what they wanted their students to become. Caring and compassionate teachers can make a difference and have a positive influence on the lives of their students, he said.

Teachers were briefed on the role and function of the new Special Services Unit of the Office of Education by the persons who will be providing the special services for our schools, Mrs. A. Albury and Mrs. D. Johnson.

Two interesting sessions on "Portfolio Assessment" and "A Teacher's Guide To the Use of the Internet" were presented by Mrs. Linda Russell and Mrs. Lynn Smith, respectively. Mrs. Russell, a lecturer at the College of the Bahamas, was assisted by Mrs. Sharmane Miller, and Mrs. Smith, Vice-Principal of Bahamas Academy Secondary School was assisted by personnel from the Bahamas Telecommunication Corporation.

At the end of the seminar, teachers felt better prepared to meet the challenges of the new school year.
