Bahamas Academy Secondary Celebrates One Bahamas '00

You missed the time of your life if you were not present at the "One Bahamas Celebration" held at Bahamas Academy Secondary recently.

The students of the Academy performed better than you could have imagined. The special assembly, with Governor-General His Excellency Sir Orville Turnquest in attendance, was blessed with original poetry written and performed by Alden Albury and Nastassja Bain. The musical genius of Carlisa Wright shone brightly as the day when she and her classmates sang and performed an original song composed by Carlisa. The theme of the song focused on the One Bahamas theme. A performance never to be outdone as the rendition of the National Anthem by Keson Tinker. It was so well done that the Governor-General singled him out for special mention.

The entire day's program was hosted by the students of the Academy gave an excellent program when he visited the school last year, but "the Academy" he said, "had risen to new heights."

One cannot call upon one's imagination if one missed this special event but see, just this one time, with special lenses, the one hundred and fifty bright-eyed high school students awaiting the arrival of the G.G. and quickly snapping to attention as his car comes to a stop at the appointed place. Look closely and you will see Cherise Roker and Latoya Gibson, 12th and 11th grade students, respectively, with precision timing sending the Bahamian flag up the pole. Watch them get into formation, then lead the students into the gym to form a guard of honor for the G.G. Listen to the trumpeters as they alert everyone to the fact that our long-awaited guest had arrived. Oh it was simply delightful.

The program was so beautiful that all were spell-bound as the eleventh graders paraded the coats of arms from a number of the islands, the students of grade 12MR sang songs appropriate from each island. The celebration of islands was narrated by Mia Pintard of grade 9.

If you haven't been to the Dundas Centre for awhile, I hope you were at the Academy as Jessica and Rancourt delighted everyone with their dramatic performance of the "The Operator," written by James Catalyn. Jessica reminded the audience that only in the Bahamas is it possible to have 'V' as in Victor or 'V' as in Walter.

Just when everyone thought that things were over and could get no better, Scoot's Cafeteria served up a four-course meal the likes of which had never been seen before, and when the guests were leaving, aside from licking their fingers, they applauded the excellent service that the 12th graders had provided under the leadership of the host and hostess, head boy Samuel Adderley and and head girl Morgan Gilbert.

Oh what a wonderful showing by the students of the Academy. When all was said and done, the G.G. informed his audience, among whom was President Albury, that after what he had seen he was assured that our future is in good hands.

Bahamas Academy Secondary is especially grateful to President Albury, who returned from Jamaica to be in attendance at this function. Also we thank our special guests who included the P.T.A. President and executive members, parents, Board members and school family members such as Mrs. Mary Brennen and Jean Antonio. We are also grateful to Mr. Mitchell who took time to train our students for the occasion and to Mr. Rohand Creighton who spared no effort to attend practices to ensure that this event was a success. Thanks to all of you for your prayers, efforts and your presence. We also say thank you to Mrs. R. Smith and our school choir for their rendition of the One Bahamas theme song. May God bless you always. - C. Creighton

CAT ISLAND'S 'STEP TO ETERNAL LIFE CRUSADE FOR CHRIST'

Cat Island was saturated with the Advent Gospel from October 22 to November 5, 2000. Pastor W. T. Adderly and his team members Bro. B. Linden, Nurse A. Linden, Bro. & Sister George Williamson, Sisters Joycelyn Cooper, Faycetta King, Margaret Cleare, Bro. Willard Clear and Sis. McCoy took up the challenge of witnessing for Jesus. Today because of their efforts we can all say "To God be the Glory" for a baptism of two precious souls, 22 decisions for baptism in the future (a special Bible study group was organized) and more than 50 indications to keep the Sabbath.

The first week witnessed 80 to 100 visitors in attendance, with 150 persons attending to hear the topics: "Seven Ways to Keep your Lover." (on marriage) and "Walking with Jesus all the way" (on the Sabbath). Persons stood outside and listened as all the seats were taken, from Sabbath school and the annex of the church.

Five local pastors and three evangelists of different faiths attended on these nights and received the special tract by Kenneth R. Strand on "How Sunday became the popular day of Worship." Due to the isalnd-wide effect of the Crusade which drew people from Devil's Point in the south, to Orange Creek in the north, and the daily conversations about the Crusade, a special meeting of all religious, civic and community leaders was held, excluding the Evangelist, or any Adventists.

On encouraging a pastor to enlighten his members with God's truth from the Bible, the pastor answered Evangelist Adderley: "I told my people that Saturday is the Sabbath according to the Bible, but we all cannot make a sudden change because it would disrupt and disturb our regular community way of life. Too many problems would arise."

Along with many other problems such as the bus having mechanical problems in the 2nd week, physical illness occurred. The Lord performed miracles so that the Evangelist preached every night with power the claims of the Gospel. Two pastors requested future seminars for their men's fellowship.

Pray for God's overruling in this regard and for the salvation of many souls in Cat Island in the very near future. Members from Cat Island who would like to be a part of a planned future witnessing program can contact Pastor Adderley at 324-4939. Pray continually for this future harvest. -Pastor W. T. Adderley
