Graduates Encouraged To Excel

Thursday, June 8, 2000, will forever be remembered by administration, staff members, conference officials, proud parents, well-wishers, but especially by the first graduating class of 2000 of Bahamas Academy Elementary School, who chose as their aim: Step into the future and reach for the stars! Class motto: Your attitude determines your altitude, and the class colors were red, gold and silver.

Immediately following the graduates' procession, Lashan Carey of 5F feted the audience with her melodious voice as she bravely sang the national anthem. We were then welcomed by our education director Dr. John Carey. Mrs. Estherlean Ash, our school's principal, gave an account of school events and functions that took place during the school year.

Mr. Michael Pintard amazed us with his thought-provoking keynote address to the students. He began by extending congratulations and told them that they were "vital investments" to the nation's needs and thus were at the closure of chapter one in their lives. His message to those who excelled was to have pride, but not to relax - "move on." Those who were not as successful were urged to re-evaluate, rededicate and readjust their positions in order to be successful.

Our vibrant speaker focused on the technological and scientific trends that affect the world globally, specifying that they are living in a competitive world where only the strong will survive.

He stated, "If you are going to be one of the persons who will assess, prescribe, design or implement a better economic, political, cultural, social, judicial, sporting system or model or process, you have got to be equipped to get the job done."

His final remarks to the graduates were for the need to be educated, get involved in productive work and rise to the next level by setting high standards and goals, being disciplined, setting priorities and knowing oneself. We thank Mr. Michael Pintard for his most valuable and timely remarks to the graduates.

Christa Lowe, our valedictorian, addressed the crowd and spoke about their tenure at Bahamas Academy Elementary, thus highlighting those memorable and most rewarding experiences that will indeed last a lifetime.

Our salutatorian, Shekera Romer, spoke most graciously honoring all parents and teachers as the excited graduates pinned corsages on them.

After receiving their valedictorian and salutatorian trophies, both girls were given scholarships. Special presentations were made following the graduates, acceptance of their elementary school certificates. Those who were on the honor roll from grades one through six received special trophies for their diligent performance. Mario Smith and Ryan Heastie received the chaplain's award and the principal's award went to Krishna Virgil. -Pam Morris

BAHAMAS CONFERENCE COMMITTEE ACTION UPDATE

At its meeting of May 21st, the Executive Committee of the Conference voted the following:

Ministerial Training

In harmony with its action earlier in the year to grant study-leave to ministers to pursue the M. Div Program at Andrews University, on a rotation basis, the Executive Committee voted to extend this offer to Pastors Kent Price and Danny Major. Having accepted the opportunity to enhance their ministerial skills, these pastors will commence their study programs, on a full-time basis, in September, 2000.

Pastoral District Changes

The Executive Committee also voted the following pastoral changes, effective August 1, 2000:

Pastor Barrington Brennen: Conference Counselor and Associate Communications Director with responsibility for Internet Ministries.

Pastor Andrew Burrows- Pastor, Johnson Park Church.

Pastor Owusu Boateng - Pastor, South Andros District.

Pastor Lynden Williams - Pastor, Eleuthera District.

Pastor Rodger Moncur - Pastor, Abaco District.

Pastor Gary King - Pastor, Exuma District (Jan. 1, 2001). -K. D. Albury, Chairman

SOUTH ANDROS CRUSADE

On May 7, 2000, the evangelism train rolled into South Andros. At the helm of this great evangelistic team was Pastor L. C. Rolle, who serves as Field Secretary for Family Islands Ministerial director and Pastor of the South Andros District.

The crusade got off to a great start with Elder N. R. Rahming serving as co-ordinator, and Bro. Joseph Johnson as music co--ordinator. Other members of the team included Bro and Sis Victor Miller, Martin Rahming, Bro. and Sis. Morris and the Board of Elders.

Each night visitors and members sat under the powerful preaching of the man of God. The music was most uplifting. From beginning to end, the objective was for the people to see Jesus and build a relationship with him.

As a result of this dynamic effort which was ably assisted by Sis Nora McCalla from the New Englerston Church, the Lord added to the church numerous souls. We say to God be the glory.

According to Bro N. Rahming, this crusade now holds the record for the number of souls won in a crusade outside of a tent effort or in a church to date in South Andros.

Efforts are underway to labor for an additional three persons by the end of August, so that South Andros can report being the first Family Island district to reach its soul goal in 2000.
