![]() THE LOGOSA Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 5, Number 24, June 10, 2000 |
The dedication, which commenced shortly before 3 p.m. with the cutting of the ribbon by Curline Johnson Lundy, attracted both church and community individuals from near and far. Coming from abroad was a team of both Union and Conference officers, workers and members. The union delegation comprised all three officers, which is rather rare, given the demands of West Indies Union. As for the local conference, Pastor Albury, his officers, departmental directors, pastors and office workers made the trip. Also in attendance were Mr. Alvin Smith, Member of Parliament for the area, and Senator Lonnie Smith, a nearby resident and friend.
Following greetings from numerous Church leaders in the community as well as Conference pastors, Pastor Albury introduced Pastor Wellington, who in turn delivered a powerful message on the church. Elder L. B. Wellington, President of West Indies Union, noted that "The church is a group of Christian people" as well as "an organization that Christ gives life to...." He also explained that "This church must be Christ-centered and people- oriented." A dedicatory prayed by Pastor N. S. Fraser ensued. Later, the corner-stone was laid by Pastor Wellington. Moderator for the occasion was Pastor Owusu Boateng, district pastor.
The Conference Administration commends Pastor Boateng, his family and members for an impressive service and the hospitality rendered.
COMMUNITY SERVICES REPORT
The Community Services Departments of the Northern Region are alive and well. Dr. M. D. Toote along with other qualified presenters converged on Grand Bahama May 4 to 7, 2000, to conduct the 3rd annual Community Services Workshop.
This program is designed to equip the Laity for wider service in the conference. It also seeks to break away from the traditional concept of Dorcas to include areas of community work such as grief recovery, working with Government agencies and social services, abuse in terms of children and spouses, drugs, alcohol and discovering ways to minister to persons affected in the various areas.
Some fifty persons participated in these workshops and were richly blessed. Dr. Toote challenged the graduates to continue to broaden their visions and sharpen their effort as we move into the 21st century. Other presenters included Elder Harold Campbell from West Indies Union, Dr. John Carey, Pastor Barrington Brennen and Mrs. L. Duvalier.
A new committee to guide the community thrust was established under the leadership of Pastor Tinker. To activate its mission, the committee assisted the burnt victims of Abaco by supplying them with much needed supplies of blankets, pillows and quilts.
Surely, the Lord has been blessing the Northern Region as we seek to fulfill God's commission to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need. -P. Scavella,, Field Secretary, N.R.
SALEM SDA CHURCH CONDUCTS CRUSADE
For three weeks, the members of the Salem SDA Church (Abaco -Francophone), along with Evangelist Marc Charles, shared the message of salvation with the community of Marsh Harbour.
As a result of their witness, the preaching of the gospel, and the workings of the Holy Spirit, on
Sabbath, May 27, a number of persons took their stand for Jesus by being baptized. To God be
praised. Please pray for these new believers and also the continual spreading of the gospel in the
Abaco District. - Pastor A. Burrows
Pastor Is Ordained
In what is considered a high service of Adventists, Church leaders, members and family members converged on the historic Grant's Town SDA Church for the ordination of Pastor Andrew Burrows June 30.
Pastor Andrew Eugene Burrows, a young man who "grew up" spiritually at the Grant's Town SDA Church was most gratified along with his wife, Karen Marie, to have been set aside for ministry.
Presenting him was Dr. Leonard Johnson, Executive Secretary of the Conference. Pastor Johnson shared the experience and evangelistic accomplishments of the ordinand. However, the highlight was the sermon delivered by the Chief Pastor of West Indies Union comprising the Bahamas, Elder Leon B. Wellington, which was preceded by special music rendered by the Grant's Town Sanctuary Choir under the directorship of Nelson Bain. Pastor Wellington who employed a narrative of Peter in John 21 commissioned young Pastor Andrew Burrows to "feed both lambs and sheep." In addition, he charged him "to preach the word and not the opinion of men". He also urged him to "exalt and exhort" as well as "speak the word earnestly and with sincerity". Upon completion of the message Pastor Paul Scavella, Field Secretary for the Northern Region, escorted Pastor Burrows to the platform for the prayer of consecration, which was well done by Senior Pastor H. A. Roach. This prayer will long be remembered. Pastor N. S. Fraser, Executive Secretary of West Indies Union, charged Pastor Andrew to be committed to the ministry and said that he should be a steward of God's Word. Pastor Keith D. Albury, Conference President, welcomed Pastor Burrows into the fraternity of ordained ministers. Next, Sister Ann Albury, president of the Shepherdess Club, welcomed Sister Karen Burrows to sorrows and joys of service as a minister's wife.
The service ended with remarks and an emotional prayer by newly, ordained minister Andrew Burrows.

MARSH HARBOUR WOMEN'S MINISTRIES PRAYER BREAKFAST
Mrs. Arleen Sands, Women's Ministries Director for the Northern Region, left the women of Marsh Harbour on a spiritual high. She was the speaker at the recent prayer breakfast held in Marsh Harbour on May 28. Under the topic "Women of Faith," Mrs. Sands reminded the ladies that faith is belief without proof and trust without reservation. Examples were drawn from such Biblical figures as Hannah, Sarai, Ruth, Naomi and Esther.
Esther was remembered for having been a woman of action, combining faith with works to save her people. We are admonished that, like Esther, in the face of life-threatening circumstances, we should stand. We should pray as if everything depended upon God and act as if everything depended on us.
She also focused on the woman with the twelve- year issue of blood. "Issues," Sister Sands said, are anything that causes life to leak from us slowly. We learned from the woman with the issue that we, should press toward Jesus until we touch Him. We, will know when we touch Him because He will touch us back.
Accompanying Mrs. Sands were eight ladies from the Women's Ministries Department of the Freeport Church. Special thanks to Sis. Karen Burrows, director for the Marsh Harbour Church, and all the ladies from the Abaco district for making this weekend possible. A heart-felt thank you to the ladies from Freeport for coming over to Abaco and sharing with us. -Nadine Palmer
