![]() THE LOGOSA Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Weekly Publication Volume 5, Number 5, January 29, 2000 |
Led by President K. D. Albury, a team of departmental officials and their families, as well as pastors and members from Abaco came to fellowship with us and be blessed.
In bold letters, the theme of the Convention, "Experiencing The Certainty of His Coming", stood out before us giving hope and courage to press on.
The special guests for the occasion were Dr. and Mrs. Paulien of Andrews University and Mrs. Henry of West Indies Union. As Pastor Paulien spoke nightly, he opened our dark understanding and did not our hearts hunger for more! He spoke on topics such as:
1. Seven guiding principles for Bible study
2. The Risk of SDAs setting dates for Christ's return.
3. Things are not always what they appear to be.
4. The Devil's work of imitation through false prophets and teachings deceiving even the very elect.
5. Satan's false philosophy - Wherever it abounds the suicide rate is strong e.g., Sweden and New Zealand.
During the Sabbath School period the stage was set and a wonderful view of heaven was highlighted. The Adventist Youth session depicted our heritage and the early beginnings of the work here on Grand Bahama. The final charge came from President Albury as he encouraged the brethren to be faithful. Saturday climaxed with a Youth banquet at Workers' House.
On Sunday officers met once more for a workshop. The morning's thought was brought to us by Mrs. Iris Henry, who encouraged us to follow the Lord's example to be a 'people person' and share the gospel. The rest of the time was spent in departmental meetings. Another convention has passed into eternity but it will not be soon forgotten because it is number one of the century. Hats off to our convention choir for its splendid performance and faithfulness. - E. Lopez

Educationally Speaking
Motivating Educators and Students Part I
We have come to a time in our history when change is again dictating how we educate our children to cope with new ways of thinking and doing. Advancement in the use of technology, especially information technology, has pushed us, if I may use a hyperbole here, light years away from the decades preceding the 1960's. The students of today can no longer compete or survive with only the knowledge of that generation, and for this reason, educators must equip themselves to function within the context of this changed and changing milieu.
The United States showed its recognition of this fact when in 1994 President Clinton signed the Goals 2000: Educate America Act calling for the following results by the year 2000:
All Children will start school ready to learn
90% graduation rate
All children competent in core subjects
First in the world in math and science
Safe, disciplined, drug-free schools
Professional development for educators.
Increased parental involvement in learning.
The truth is that whereas in times past activities have been the MEANS and the ENDS of teaching, today the emphasis is on standards. Standards re the ends and activities are the means we need to use to help students get there. (Stay tuned for part II)
