The Hon. Frank H. Watson, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, also delivered remarks. Also present at the joint service were members from sister churches, a number of conference officers and pastors, and the Pathfinders' Band.
After referring to Jesus's admonition in Matthew 5:20 for his hearers to exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees and teachers of the law in order to gain entry into the kingdom of heaven, Pastor Johnson suggested three ways the law officers might consider to exceed. They are in their admiration and respect for the law, in their application and execution of the law, and in their looking at the Lawgiver.
"I challenge both you officers and the audience to have a greater regard for law and order," Pastor Johnson said, adding that this may seem an unnecessary statement for the officers since their job is to uphold and maintain the laws of the land. Unfortunately, he added, there are reports of dishonest law officers who would compromise for the almighty dollar, and turn an eye for illegal and false gain. He cited the late Customs officer Sean Symonette as an example of a person who lost his life in 1999 because of his stand for principle.
Considering the application of the law, Pastor Johnson, who is also pastor of the New Providence Church, called on the officers to uphold the law by their lifestyles. "There are too many complaints about law officers who talk down at others, and treat them as inferior beings," he said. "Jesus wants us to have respect for mankind. I honestly feel that you can use greater discretion in applying the law."
Pastor Johnson, in a reference to the need to look to the Lawgiver, said the Scribes and Pharisees experienced no peace because they ignored the Lawgiver. They were so concerned with the letter of the law that they failed to see and welcome Jesus, he said.
Pastor Johnson said he believes there is much hope for the law enforcement agencies of The Bahamas, and urged their members "to be the best that you can be."
Deputy Prime Minister Watson said there can be little doubt that as bad as crime was in 1999, without the valiant efforts of the officers, it would have been worse. "I am pleased to report," he said, "that already there is increased co-operation between the various branches of law enforcement, and a willingness to reach out and to embrace the public in operations against crime." -Christopher Symmonett
EVANGELISM EXPLOSION 2000
March 5th, 2000, will be a time of evangelistic explosion here in the Bahamas as five Gospel Crusades are conducted simultaneously by Pastors from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This is the first time the Church is embarking upon an evangelistic programme of this magnitude.
Conducting the Crusade in Grand Bahama will be Pastor Paul A. Scavella, a 1975 graduate of West Indies College and the co-ordinator of the Church's work in the Northern Bahamas.
Here in Nassau, there will be four regional Crusades. In the Northeastern District, whose territories include such areas as Centreville, Kemp Road, Fox Hill and Prince Charles Drive, the speaker will be the youthful and dynamic Pastor T. Basil Sturrup. This Gospel Crusade will be conducted under a giant tent on Parkgate Road.
Pastor E. Dannie Clarke, Youth Director, will be the speaker for the Northwestern Federation Crusade. The Churches involved in this Crusade include Grant's Town, Johnson Park, New Providence, and New Englerston. This Crusade will be located on Blue Hill Road just between the National Insurance and BEC buildings.
The Southwestern Crusade will have as its speaker Pastor M. A. Smith, the Pastor of the Hillview Church. He will be assisted by Pastors L. C. Rolle, Kent Price, W. T. Adderley and their congregations. The location of this Crusade is yet to be determined.
Then there is the Francophone Crusade involving the three existing Haitian Churches within the Conference. This Crusade will be under the directorship of Pastor Edward St. Fleur. It is expected that this Crusade will be held in the Fox Hill area.
With a goal of 1,000 baptisms in 2000, it is expected that under the leading of the Holy Spirit, these Crusades will yield a total of 500 souls by the first part of April.
With the prayers and support of the members in each region, we look forward to assisting the Police in the fight against crime by directing our young people to Christ, the One who alone can transform the hearts of men and make a difference in their lives and our country.
-Pastor L. C. Rolle, Ministerial Director

Motivating Educators and Students Part IV
Nothing succeeds like success. When students do well, teachers are motivated to work with them. But the road to success is not easy. It means hard work and a willingness to change the way we think and do. The first step toward success is preparation. We are all familiar with the saying: if you fail to prepare, then you are preparing to fail. Success crowns labour, and if we are going to succeed in this 21st century, it means we will have to pull ourselves up by the bootstrap. As I said before, motivation is intrinsic. It comes from inside, even when it is aroused by a form of incentive or training.
As teachers, we must be willing to change our traditional modality so as to reach all the students entrusted to us. This may mean professional development for some, if not most, of us. Professional development does not necessarily mean going back to school. It can be achieved by in-service training, subscribing to educational journals, buying books and reading them, getting on the Internet and logging the information that is there prepared and ready for you. We must engage in these activities if we are to remain current in the 21st century, and remain in the business of education. We must be informed that knowledge is power. It gives satisfaction, a feeling of being in control rather than dependent and inferior. It uplifts the spirit and makes you feel good about yourself.
BA SECONDARY ON-THE-JOB WORK EXPERIENCE
How often is it that young high school graduates enter college not sure of what career they should pursue? It happens often enough and it is usually a frustrating experience for both the students and their parents.
In an effort to give the students hands-on experience of different careers, Bahamas Academy Secondary School has as one of its annual programmes for seniors one week of on-the-job work experience. During this week, students are placed in jobs of their choice under supervisors and given meaningful tasks to complete which will give them a "taste" of the daily activities in the career of their choice.
From January 24 to 29, 2000, seniors from Bahamas Academy Secondary School donned their work clothes and showed up for work each day form 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
At the end of the week, supervisors evaluated the students on their performances and the majority received high marks. Many employers expressed their sorrow to see the students return to school, and some promised summer jobs. Many of the students reluctantly returned to school on January 31, stating that they wished they had one more week.
Upon their return to school, the students were given an opportunity to share their experiences with their classmates, describe what they had learned, and state whether they will continue to pursue the same career when they enter college. Some students changed their minds after their week on the job.
This program has proven to be a great benefit to the students year after year as they begin their preparation for college. We'd like to express our sincere appreciation to the many Adventist employers who assist us in placing our students year after year.
