Hannas Honoured at Retirement Banquet

Under the theme "Remembering When," February 5, 2000, will go down in the pages of history for Pastor and Mrs. Royden Hanna as a memorable one. It was a night of sparkles and dazzles as children, family members, co-workers, friends and church members gathered at the Nassau Marriott ballroom to wish this well-dressed, stately couple a happy retirement as they sail into the sunset to enjoy yet another chapter in their lives.

Marching to the music of "Chariot of Fires", honor marshals Pastors Gary King and T. Basil Sturrup, followed by two flowers-girls, escorted the Hannas to their well deserved and honored seats before a sold-out ballroom crowd and a well picked and capable master of ceremonies, Mr. Raymond Antonio, who did a job of entertaining the crowd.

Toasting the couple were Pastors S. N. McKinney, N. E. Scavella, Ms. Desiree Brown and Mrs. Estherlean Ash, who made a presentation on behalf of the Early Learning Centre and the Elementary School. Sister Ann Albury made a presentation on behalf of the Shepherdess Club, Pastor L. C. Rolle on behalf of the Ministerial Department and Pastor K. D. Albury on behalf of the Bahamas Conference of S.D.A.

The highlight of the evening came during the honorees' speeches. They were all thankful to God for allowing them to be used by Him in serving in His vineyard wherever they were sent from time to time during their 80 plus years of combined service.

Pastor Hanna stated that the highest point in his ministry was when he saw his parents and most of his sisters and brothers along with their families give their lives to the Lord. Pastor Hanna sees this chapter in his life as one in which he can reflect on the goodness of God, a time when he can go back to his birthplace and share the gospel with more of God's children who have not yet decided to follow Him all the way.

Sister Hanna, who has taught from Early Learning to the Continuing Education Division of the Bahamas Conference, is blessed with fortitude and patience. Not many persons are able to look back over the years with such accomplishment and excitement. Sis Hanna said, when she see her students in all sectors of the Bahamas serving with dignity, it gives her great joy to know that she had a role in molding their lives.

Surely we can say to God be the Glory for the things He has done and will continue to do in the lives of Pastor and Mrs. R. I. Hanna as they enjoy their retirement. - Vernita L. Kelly

Educationally Speaking

Motivating Educators and Students Part III Educators must know their subject area well, and develop the skill in its delivery. When these are in place, they will be able to set standards which help (1) to focus their curriculum, (2) refine work done in the past, (3) make expectations clear to students, and (4) improve student learning.

The standards are the what and why of the educational programme; that, is, what students should know and be able to do. It leads to improved student performance, and promotes more challenging, equitable, and rewarding experiences for all learners. Learning is intentional and more purposeful as it addresses the needs of students and the school's constituencies. In this way, parents, business people and community leaders become more involved in the education of the young people.

In the teaching/learning situation, educators must become aware of the concept of multiple intelligences in order to provide opportunities for all students. The new concept of intelligence is not the numerical level of the student's intelligence quotient, so the question is no longer: How smart are you? But rather: How are you smart? This new theory, developed by Howard Gardner, is intended to assist teachers in developing each student's intellectual potential. Teachers, for the most part, have placed an adequate theory of human intelligence -- that is, theories of the mind.

In Gardner's new theory, he attributes specific functions to different regions of the brain, and in this way makes a case for many kinds of intelligencies. It therefore means that the traditional view of intelligence as being verbally and mathematically bright is no longer the norm, and the teachers are now more open toward students who are not particularly bright in these areas. They no longer see or label them as failures, but can work with them in the areas in which they achieve success. As a result, their self-esteem is raised and they are motivated to perform.
