Family Islands Conventions

Convention 2000 moved into many of our Family Islands during last weekend. Heading a list of conference leaders and directors was Pastor K. D. Albury, conference president. Accompanied by his wife, he traveled to Exuma where convention was conducted on Friday and Sabbath. According to Pastor Albury, "the attendance was the best witnessed in Exuma." In addition, he indicated that the weekend was highly spiritual consisting of great preaching, lively gospel music, a great fellowship meal and an informative question and answer period. Reports also indicate that many of the local pastors attended the Friday evening meeting. Congrats to Pastor Major and team for a well-planned and meaningful weekend.

Over on the Island of San Salvador Pastor L. A. Johnson and Dr. J. Carey joined up with Pastor Duncombe and the local membership to commence convention. However, there was an added feature as a Bible Marathon was launched on Friday, January 28. Scores of students along with their principal, Mr. Burrows, reported for the initial reading. Dr. Carey preached on Friday night and Pastor Johnson delivered the Sabbath morning message.

Pastors Toote and Clarke traveled to Eleuthera to share the joys of convention with the pastor and members there. Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound came together on Sabbath morning to hear Pastor Clarke while Pastor Toote and Pastor Boateng traveled to the north to meet with believers. Delivering the message was Pastor Toote. Over all, the weekend was uplifting.

Pastors M. A. Smith and H. A. Roach preached in convention in the South Andros district.

Finally, Pastors Leo C. Rolle and W. T. Adderley traveled to Crooked Island to minister to the saints of God in Landrail Point. Services were conducted on Sabbath morning and on Sunday and Monday evenings. Reports also indicate a grand weekend of Biblical preaching, good gospel music and fellowship.

Today, Convention 2000 continues in Abaco and North Andros.

VETERAN COUPLE RETIRES

The retirement of Pastor and Mrs. Roy Hanna produces a void in the worker force of Bahamas Conference that will be difficult to fill. Their combined contribution of over 80 years, is greatly appreciated and will long be remembered.

After a stint at Bahamas Academy, this missionary-minded couple left footprints on a number of the Family islands. Their first appointment outside Nassau was in Andros, where Pastor Hanna supervised the district and his wife ran the school. Some of their other appointments included work on Eleuthera and Cat Island.

Pastor Hanna, also a well-known educator, has pastored at one time or another most of the churches here in Nassau. Among these were Centreville, Grant's Town, Hillview and his most recent appointment, Philadelphia, where he rendered commendable service. Sister Hanna's contributions were mainly in the classroom of Bahamas Academy, especially her work with the tiny tots.

A man with a quiet spirit but firm conviction, Pastor Hanna represents mature experience and judgement. His gift to win his own family to the Truth is something to be admired.

This dedicated couple has raised a nice, talented family --three sons and two daughters. Two of their children are giving their services to the cause of God.

We wish Pastor and Mrs. Roy Hanna God's richest blessings as they retire from active service. -Ruth McKinney

Educationally Speaking

Motivating Educators and Students Part I

Whereas in times past activities were the MEANS and the ENDS of teaching, today the emphasis is on standards. Standards are the ends and activities are the means we need to use to help students get there.

All students will leave grades 4, 8 and 12 having demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter including English, mathematics, science, foreign language, civics, and government, economics, art and geography, and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in one American modern economy.

We need to consider seriously the above and make it our goal as well. How shall we do this? We have to motivate ourselves . Motivation is intrinsic. One may have the knowledge and will to achieve these ends, but this will not happen without the desire to do so. Motivation has been compared to a motor vehicle. The steering wheel helps to direct you where you want to go, but it is the engine that supplies the power to go.

Educators must be motivated to perform and display their enthusiasm in the task to be performed. If they are not enthusiastic their students will not be. (Stay tuned for part III)
