Mark, Jr., Aaron, Charlene and Mark "Red Eagle" West

           ARCHERY FAMILY

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY!

Encouraging groups of all ages Colton resident, Mark West, his wife Charlene, an employee at the Quiet Hour in Redlands and their two sons Mark, Jr., and Aaron, have been using a bow and arrow to get the attention of our youth.

As a National, International and Olympic archery competitor in 1972, Mark had to learn how to focus and concentrate.  He had to learn to not be distracted or let obstacles get in his way.  Now he is teaching young people these principles and is willing to help others learn to focus and set goals.  There are many distractions out there.  If we don’t get their attention, someone else will.  The best part of what we do, says mark, is to teach our kids in the community to find a mentor worth listening to.  And the best place to start is with mom and dad, grandparents, teachers and pastors.  Someone you trust and respect.  We are trying to get the youth of America to be better than we ever were, says Mark, and to not quit on their God given’ potential.  To dream again.

I am proud of my Native American culture and proud to be an archer.  But what makes me the    most proud is that my sons are learning to give to others and to help teach mentoring.

Mark’s wife, Charlene, and their sons travel the country hoping to make a difference by performing assembly programs geared to make a point to young people.  Using various trick shots on and off a stage emphasizing a clean healthy lifestyle and focusing on your goals, they are doing just that.  They are also raising money to purchase and donate all of the equipment necessary to help set up archery departments in schools that can’t afford to, schools like Calexico Mission School, Hollbrook Indian School, and many others.

You should see the look on peoples faces when an arrow flies down the aisle of their school or church.  It really gets their attention.  The West’s shoot to popular music that the kids enjoy which makes them relax a little.  Then a life long message is delivered.

In March 2000 the West family made appearances in Zurich and in Jerusalem.  In 2001 they toured central and northern California up through Oregon putting on over 30 exhibitions.  In 2002 they appeared in Florida and Mexico and also joined an evangelistic team in Africa.  In 2003 they toured Milwaukee, Chicago, and St. Louis then travelled to North Carolina and Tennessee.  In 2004 our sharpshooting team tourned New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Toronto Canada.  Then in the summer of that year did a 10 day stint in Minnesota.  In August of 2004 they set a new Guinness World Record then taught over 1000 kids beginning Archery Skills that same week in Oshkosh Wisconsin.  In November a Week of Prayer was done for Las Vegas Jr. Academy.

Locally they have performed for the Redlands Chamber of Commerce, Redlands Morning Kiwanis Club, California Youth Authority, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda Academy, Redlands Junior Academy, La Sierra Academy, along with over 200 churches, schools and other organizations.  The West’s are encouraging other families to get out and make a difference.
