Our History
The West Edmonton Seventh-day Adventist Church is a member of the world-wide sisterhood of Adventist churches. We believe in proclaiming the "good news" of the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, to every kindred tongue and people, alerting them to be prepared for His soon return. Located in the western sector of the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Edmonton West, as it is more familiarly known, has a membership comprised of people from many different lands and cultures. For example, we have members from Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Canada, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominica, England, Ethiopia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Kenya, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, Poland, Rwanda, Trinidad, Yugoslavia and Zimbabwe. In the 1970s people from everywhere flocked to Alberta because of its booming economy. With this influx came Seventh-day Adventists with Caribbean roots. Initially these newcomers attended Sabbath services in the existing churches but somehow the spontaneity, warmth, friendliness, enthusiastic singing and responsive "Amens" they had been accustomed to from "back home" were missing. This motivated Pastor Sinclair Kydd, who was later to become the
first pastor of Edmonton West, to approach the conference about addressing
the needs of the Caribbean brethren. The first fruits of this discussion
was the formation of the Caribbean Association of Adventists in Alberta,
popularly known as The conference also agreed to the organizing of an Adventist congregation on the West side of Edmonton. Although this congregation was (and still is) open to anyone regardless of ethnic origin, it became the church home for many of the Caribbean believers in Edmonton. This new congregation of believers originally worshipped in a rented facility at 163 street and 105th avenue but God had plans for us and we were able to eventually purchase our own church (at our present location) in the mid-80s and have been worshipping there ever since. Our Mission StatementOur mission is to provide a warm caring atmosphere in which individuals can worship God and be encouraged to pursue a loving personal relationship with Him.
Our Core Values
Join Us in WorshipLike every other Seventh-day Adventist congregation throughout the
world, we at West Edmonton come together every Sabbath (Saturday) morning
to study the word of God, Sabbath School begins the day's service. This commences at 9:15 a.m. with song service, followed by words of encouragement and reports from the mission fields around the world . Sabbath School concludes with small group discussions and Bible study of specific topics as outlined in the quarterly lesson guide. There are also Sabbath School classes specially designed for children, teens, young adults, newly baptized members and visitors. Our worship hour or "midday service" begins at 11:00 a.m. The worship service for us is the highlight of the commemoration of the Sabbath. It consists of special inspirational musical selections rendered by members or invited guests, congregational singing, prayers of the people, returning of tithes and offerings and soul-stirring exhortations presented from the Word of God.
