Sanctuary
By
Peggy Harris
Inspired by Exodus 25:1-22
There is a place, a safe haven, where I can meet with my God.
This Creator of the universe made a special sanctuary for me
to be able to come to without fear, just as I am.
This God lovingly looks into my soul,
through the layers of self-protection
added through fear, misunderstanding, and pain.
No hiding is needed from this comforting Presence.
No shame is felt because of past experiences.
I feel safe and I am able to open my mind and heart.
As we talk I feel the trappings of sin, shame, disappointment, pain, and
abuse drop away.
Very gently the Comforting Holy One
applies healing balm to my wounds,
and salve to my eyes so I might see more clearly,
the hope for my hopelessness.
This is a private place, a secluded place,
where I can dimly glimpse the glory of this Holy of Holies.
As my eyes adjust to the Glory I behold,
there is no fear of this kindly, understanding King.
God understands my sorrow.
For once I don't have to run away and hide
for God is always just and merciful.
As my rags slip away I am warmed
by the clothes of heavenly righteousness.
I sense that I can return to this wondrous place
as I continue my journey through the valleys,
plains, and hilltops of life.
This holy of holy places will always be there for me
and anyone else who longs for a safe haven.
Will you come to this place, this safe haven?
There is room for you in this holy sanctuary.
God waits for you, friend of mine.
Come, come and be comforted, now, just as you are.
Come into this place of release of all pain, sadness, ill feeling,
degradation, and desperation.
Come, suffering victim of abuse,
Come sinful perpetrator of molestation.
Come, lay your burden, whatever it may be,
at the feet of Immanuel.
Here the flames of Glory will give you new life,
restore your broken spirit,
heal your mortal wounds inflicted by sins and sinners.
You will be made a whole person.
You will be kept a whole person
by this great Power of the Universe.
