Shock And Awe
by Dan Redmon, Destination Sabbath School Bulletin,
Beltsville Seventy-day Adventist Church, Maryland

A few years ago I was told by a Godly friend of mine, Ralph Arnold, that we should place a spiritual application on secular news while reading or watching it on TV. He added that when we interpret the news spiritually it will take on an art entirely different.

“SHOCK and AWE” is a new phrase for many of us. It is difficult to think of finding any informed person on this planet who secularly would think of “SHOCK and AWE” as meaning anything other than the obliteration of Saddam Hussein and his ilk.

What does, “SHOCK and AWE mean to you? What picture does it bring to your mind? I know that it will forever bring the picture of ‘bombs bursting in air’ to me. It will probably bring dread and fear to the hearts of many.

But then when you place a spiritual application to “SHOCK and AWE” what comes to mind? Can you see what “SHOCK and AWE” will be experienced by those who have been repeatedly given a grace period and repeatedly procrastinated, ignored, mocked, remained cold and indifferent to the Unconditional Love of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ and God our Father?

We read that they will plead for their own destruction. Can you now find easier to picture how the skies will look, how the ground will tremble, how the air will smell?

  • Can you imagine how those in Iraq who want to be free feel now?
  • Can you imagine how they will feel when it is all over?
  • Can you imagine the JOY we who are in love with our Redeemer will feel?
  • Can you imagine the feeling of relief we will feel when we know it is all over?

  • We’re told to get excited when we see these things happen! Matthew 24, Luke 21
  • We’re told about the great AWE we’ll feel when it’s over. The last page of Great Controversy
  • We sing the song, “Never give up, Jesus is coming! Never give up, keep holding on!
  • We need to share our personal story with others that they will know it is more than worth it.
