Finding Safety Net For Children
The Washington Times July 6, 2000
By Jill Kamp Queen of Bargains

Some things are priceless, such as the mental and spiritual health of you and your family.  There are no bargains here.  We all want health at any cost.

About a month ago, an episode of "Touched by an Angel" featured the dangers of unfiltered Internet activity.  A teen-age girl began a friendship with a male stranger in an on-line chat room.  She thought her computer pal also was a teen-ager.  He even showed her a photo that, of course, wasn't of himself.  When she finally met him, he used an old ruse to get her to his apartment.

If her family had not caught on and tracked her down, she would have been a statistic, a victim of an Internet predator.

A study in September by Safe America Foundation and Yankelovich Partners showed that 53 percent of teens had encountered Web sites that included pornography hate or violence.  Of those who had encountered such things, 91 percent had found the sites unwittingly while searching the Web.

So what Internet sites are your children surfing these days?  Even if they are the most naïve youngsters in the world, they still could be connected inadvertently to porn sites with the click of a mouse.  Sometimes, the most innocent-sounding Web site also can deposit "cookies" on your hard drive, and you will receive e-mail messages from undesirable places.

The author of this article recommends FamilyClick.  There are other Internet providers that filter unwanted sites and e-mails.  It is of value for families to check out safe sources for their children's Internet safety.  With the easy access to the Internet and the hypnotic attraction some adults have to pornography it is best to play it safe and not put themselves or their children at risk.
