In The Beginning...?

By George E. Rice, Pastor

For many decades evolution has stood at center stage as the explanation for the origin of life.  Taught in public schools, portrayed on the screen (for example, Jurassic Park), and accepted by the popular press, Darwinism has tolerated no challenges to its teachings on origins.  But this may be changing.

Educators in the state of Ohio have joined the debate that is now going on in Kansas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska over teaching "intelligent design" as an explanation of the origin of life alongside evolution, according to CHRISTIANITY TODAY and WORLD.  In Ohio the state Board of Education Standards Committee has established a panel of educators to discuss the issue.  The CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER found that six in ten people in the Cleveland area wanted both traditional evolution and intelligent design taught in public schools (WORLD, 9-14-02).  (Read the article at www.Cleveland.com as well as view a list of other articles about the Intelligent Design Debate)

The Triadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church invited physicist Dr. Robert Gentry to present a seminar on creation.  He presented the results of decades of research on microscopic Polonium radiohalos found in granite rocks that suggest instant creation by intelligent design.  He also dealt with recent astronomical discoveries that demonstrate flaws in the big bang and suggests a new model of the cosmos.  William Dembski of Baylor University and author of THE DESIGN INFERENCE told CHRISTIANITY TODAY (9-9-02) that "a challenge to evolution based on scientific rather than religious principles will 'puncture [evolution's] myth of invincibility.'"  (Read the article at www.ChristianityToday.com)

Five Reasons Why All Christians Are

Obligated To Keep The Seventh-Day Sabbath:

1.  Creation

    a.  Gen. 2:1-3 -- God blessed and sanctified the seventh-day at the time of creation.
    b.  John 1:1-3; Col. 1:16, 17; Heb. 1:2, 3 -- Jesus is the Creator of earth

Therefore, everyone who claims to be a follower of Jesus is obligated to worship upon the day that He chose, blessed, and sanctified at creation.

2.  Recreation

    a.  Luke 23:53-24:3 -- Jesus rested in the tomb between His two recreative acts--(1) death on the cross and, (2) resurrection
    b.  2 Cor. 5:17 - in Jesus we are a new creation

Therefore, as Jesus the Creator rested on the seventh day of creation, so as Recreator He rested in the tomb on the seventh-day Sabbath in His work of making possible our recreation.

3.  New Earth (Jesus does not change)

    a.  Isa. 66:22, 23 -- redeemed will observe the seventh-day Sabbath in the new earth
    b.  Heb. 13:8 -- Jesus never changes

Therefore, because Jesus chose the seventh-day Sabbath at the time of creation and this Sabbath will be observed in the new earth, this shows Jesus never changes. Because of this we are  obligated to keep the seventh-day Sabbath today if we are His followers.  Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

4.  Ten Commandment Law

    a.  Exodus 20:8-11 -- the fourth commandment
    b.  John 14:15, 21 -- if we love Jesus, we are to keep His commandments.
    c.  Gal. 3:19 -- ten commandment law given through the hand of a Mediator.
    d.  1 Tim. 2:5 -- Jesus is the only Mediator between God and man.

Therefore, because Jesus gave the 10 commandments and because the command to keep the seventh-day Sabbath is the fourth of these 10, as Christians we are obligated to obey Jesus, the law Giver, and to observe the seventh-day Sabbath.

5.  Sabbath a Sign of Santification

    a.  Exodus 31:12-17 -- Israel was commanded to observe the Sabbath because it is a sign of sanctification by God

    b.  Who is Israel?

        1)  Gal. 3:6-14, 16, 26-29 -- those who believe in Jesus are Israel, even today.
        2)  Rom. 2:28, 29; 9:6-8 -- a Jew is not one who is a physical descendant of Abraham.  A Jew is any human being who believes in Jesus.

    c.  Sign of sanctification

        1)  Exodus 31:13 -- sign that God sanctifies us or cleanses us from sin (see Ezekiel 20:12, 20).
        2)  Heb. 13:12 -- sinners are sanctified by the blood of Jesus.

Therefore, everyone who  believes in Jesus is a child of Israel and Abraham, and is obligated to observe the seventh-day Sabbath as a sign that he has accepted the blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of his sins and is sanctified by Him.

To claim to be a Christian and to ignore the seventh-day Sabbath and observe another day is a contradiction.

If we abide in Christ, if the love of God dwells in the heart, our feelings, our thoughts, our actions, will be in harmony with the will of God. The sanctified heart is in harmony with the precepts of God's law. -- Acts of the Apostles, p.563:01
