| Sermon Notes:
Almost Right
Dave reviewed the life of John Brown, who was a
militant Abolitionist, whose actions catalyzed the US Civil War in 1861.
Brown recognized that the scripture did not support the use of slavery.
Philippians 2 and 1 John 3 are two of the scripture that prompted him to
organize non-violent resistance to slavery. In 1847, he came to believe that
non-violent resistance was no longer effective, so he turned to violent
resistance.
Ultimately he led a group to take over the
government armory at Harper's Ferry, VA. It didn't take long before he and
his men were captured. On December 2, 1857 John Brown was executed. The
Civil War began just a few years later in 1861. Almost 2 million people were
killed as a result of the conflict including over 1.2 Million civilians.
John Brown understood some of the principles
of the Bible, but his methodology broke from Jesus' approach to change.
We look forward to Jesus' return. We want to
be prepared for that momentous event, and we look forward to a revival of
true godliness. The Lord wants to pour out the Holy Spirit on His People but
we are not ready to receive it.
Rather than focusing on the "rules", we
should focus on Jesus and knowing Him.
Life with Jesus is good! We should look at
the good side of events and people. Look for opportunities to praise the the
Lord and lift others up, so they can see Jesus in us.
Let's start to learn a new song: Rev 14:3 and
Rev 15:3. Praise the Lord and obey because we love Him. |
