Sermon of 07-28-01

Be Ye Ready

by Dr. D.A. Farmer, pastor

Scripture – Matt. 24:30-31, 44  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 24:31 And he shall send his angel with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other… 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

A few years ago a newspaper headline read: “Don’t make plans for Thursday.” Of course the writer was being sarcastic. The article told of a dooms day religious group that was predicting the end of the world. The group was called “The mission for the coming days.” Their headquarters is in Diary, New Hampshire. They took out newspaper ads, scattered leaflets all around predicting that the end of the world was coming in less than a week. They said that Wednesday the world was coming to an end. Thousands of members of that religious sect had already quit their jobs, sold their homes, emptied out their bank accounts and had given all their money to their minister. All this was because of their assumption that the world was about to come to an end.   The newspaper article had a punch line though. It seems that the investigating authorities found that the pastor, the leader of this so-called religious group had nearly $700,000.00 invested in securities that were not scheduled to mature until the following year.

Now let me ask you a question, and I want you to think about this because I will come back to it later. If you knew that you were going to die tomorrow and you were spending your last 24 hours on this earth, how would you spend your finally day? Turn with me to Matt. 24:1-3. “And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to [him] for to show him the buildings of the temple. 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what [shall be] the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”   Please keep in mind the context to what I believe is the greatest chapter on end time events delivered by the Son of God Himself – Jesus Christ. Now try to imagine this. The Lord and His disciples are on the slope of the Mount of Olives. It’s late Tuesday afternoon. Jesus points toward the temple in the near distances. The Temple was beautiful. It was made of huge stones. Each cut to perfect order. The disciples and every person alive at that time fully believed and expected the Temple to stand and last forever. The grounds were 500 yards or 5 footballs fields long and 400 yards or 4 footballs fields wide. In the center standing on a platform of white marble blocks was the house of worship. Some it’s stones we are told are almost 66 feet in height. It glittered and sparkled with gold. It was Jerusalem’s pride and joy, the nation’s glory.   When Jesus pointed at the Temple the disciple’s chest stuck out in pride. But Jesus sees something total different. And friends take note, His view is always total different than our view of things. He sees things in an entirety different light than what we see things. Jesus knew that the Jews had placed too much stock in the temple. So Jesus reflects the danger His people are in and warns them. Jesus says in verse 2; “Men Do you see all these stones the day is coming when not one of them will be stacked upon the other.” The disciples are devastated. They cannot believe what they just heard. “Lord the temple, destroyed?” The disciples are certain that such a thing could only happen at the end of the world. So they asked Jesus two questions; “When will it happen and what will the signs be of the end of the world?”

Jesus did not answer His disciples by taking up separately the destruction of Jerusalem and the great day of His coming. He mingled the description of these two events. Jesus starts by telling the disciples a remarkable Prophecy. This prophecy included three end time scenarios.   He tells of the Flood of Noah’s day and the end of the antediluvians world, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the end of the world for the Jews as a chosen nation. And third He tells of his second coming – the end of Satan and of his reign of sin. In each event Jesus describes the scenario of how each episode would take place.

Jesus tells of false Christ and how they will deceive many. He talks of wars and rumors of wars. He recaps that nations will rise against nations. He informs of great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places around the world. Then He adds in verse 8 that: “all these are the beginning of sorrows.” Christ also provides a sign of the ruin that was to come on Jerusalem and how they were to escape from it. (vs: 4,5,6,7,8,9,15,28).

Jesus says in verse 20; Pray that their flight out of the city not be in the winter or on the Sabbath.”   From the destruction of Jerusalem, Christ passed on to the last link in the chain of this earth's history the coming of the Son of God in His power and glory. In unmistakable language, Jesus speaks of His second coming, and gives warning of the dangers that would precede His Advent. He tells of a Great Tribulation that would last for more than a thousand years. Such a persecution as the world had never known before. Million upon millions of His followers would be killed for His namesake. And we know today that had not God's hand been stretched out to preserve His people, every person alive would have perished. Jesus said; "But for the elect's sake, those days shall be shortened." (verse 22)   At the close of the great papal persecution, Christ declared that the sun would be darkened, and the moon would not give off her light and that the stars would fall from heaven. (verse 29) “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:”   Then in verse 33 Jesus added when you see all these signs then be assured, be confident, that His second coming is just around the corner. “So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, [even] at the doors.”

Jesus also used a Parable of a fig tree, an illustration that He knew we would understand in verse 32. “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer [is] nigh:”  Just like when you and I see trees budding and feel the pollen in the air, we know that spring is just around the corner. It’s coming. It’s a guarantee. How can we know this? Because spring has always come right after these signs.   And

Jesus gives us this promise in verse 35: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”  Friends this promise is surer than the surety of Mother Nature. The Laws of Mother Nature will fail long before God’s Word will. The sun comes up every morning, the moon and stars give off their light at night. The seasons change. The flowers grow, the Salmon swim up stream, birds fly south for the winter. What goes up must come down. But more sure than all these signs put together is the Word of our Lord and Saviour, – Jesus Christ. And if He says He is coming again, soon, then you can bank on it! The signs have told us that His second coming is near, but are you ready?   Now there is something you must understand. This promise of His second coming is not staked on whether you accept it or not. It’s not staked on whether you believe it or not. It’s not even staked on whether you understand it or not. The promise stands because God says it. And happen it will, whether we are ready or not.

Friends, just because 2 Peter 3:3 and 4 reports that in the last days there would be scoffers, scoffers asking where is the promise of His second coming doesn’t stop the promise from happening. He will come and the promise is He will come soon. The fact is, because there are scoffers today asking that very question is solid proof that this promise is about to take place.   Now watch this. Along with the certainty of our Lords coming is the uncertainty of when it will take place. Look at verses 36-39; “But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe [were], so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”  Now jump down to 42-44:  “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”   At the very time when the world is asking in mockery, "Where is the promise of His coming?" the signs are being fulfilled. While the world cries, "Peace and Safety," sudden destruction is coming. While the scoffers, the ones who reject the truths of God’s Word has become presumptuous; while the routine work in all the various moneymaking schemes are carried out without regard to principle; while the student is eagerly seeking knowledge of everything but his Bible, Christ comes as a thief in the night. And only those that are ready and watching will be saved.

There is the certainty that the second coming will happen and there is the uncertainty of when it will happen. And the believers of God’s Word must live everyday with the certainty that the event of His second coming may come at any time and must come at some time. And it is this tension of the knowing and of the unknowing, the certainty of the uncertainty that must keep us all at our spiritual peak so that we are found ready when He comes. We must live by faith in the Word of God. Faith in His promises. Faith in His love and forgiveness. Faith that His second coming is soon.

I heard a story once about the devil and three of his imps. It seems that the three imps were trying to devise a plan to ruin the human race. The first imp informs the devil that he would come to this earth and tell the people that there is no God. Satan says; “That won’t work, people know there is a God.” The second imp said: “I will go and tell the people that there is no hell.” Satan replied; “That won’t work either, people have a conscious. They know they have a judgment to face someday.” Then the third imp spoke up; “I will go and tell the people there is no hurry.” Satan thought for a moment and said; “That will work, go you will ruin thousands.”

Friends, don’t be worried about the certainty if He coming. Because He is coming rather you’re ready or not. But do be worried about the uncertainty of when He is coming. Because if your not ready, then it will be to late to get ready.

And while I’m at it. Don’t judge our Lord’s coming by the calendar. There was a lot of talk about Jesus coming in the year 2,000. Verse 44 in the KJ version says: “For in such an hour as ye think NOT – the Son of Man cometh.”  Don’t worry about what year He is coming, just be ready, that’s the key!   Jesus uses the illustration that He is coming as a Thief in the night in several verses throughout the New Testament. You will find these illustrations used in: 1 Thess. 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10; and Rev. 3:3. Look them up later.   This thief phrase emphasizes “SURPRISE”. In other words they were not ready. Look at the days before the Flood. They knew the flood was coming because they had been warned. They just didn’t know the day or hour. They watched Noah build the ark. They heard Him preach day after day. They knew the name “Methuselah” meant “when he dies it will come.” “It” meaning the flood. And Methuselah died the very year the flood came. They watched the animals and birds go on board the ark. They watched Noah and his families walk up the plank through the door. They witnessed an Angel shut the door. They didn’t realize it at that moment but their probation closed. We know that the rains did not come for another 7 days. And during that time the scoffers got “scofferer”. It’s an old word I just made up. Life at that time wasn’t any different than what we experience today.

They had gotten so wrapped up into the things of the world and themselves. So much so that they could not discern the movements of God. And when the flood came, they found themselves on the outside of the ark of safety. And friends we are in the same danger.   That I why we must stay close to Jesus no matter what is happening in our life.

The Bible tells us in Acts 17:31 that God "Hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world." Rev. 14:6 adds that the everlasting gospel is to be preached "to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people."   Keep in mind Christ does not say that all the world will be converted but that "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matt. 24:14).

Let me go back to my opening question. If you had 24 hours which to live and you knew it, how would you send your last day upon this earth? And here is what I want us all to see.   If your answer is anything other than how you are NOW planning to spend the next 24 hours, then you are NOT living in readiness. Jesus said be ye ready”  That means we are to live each day as if it is our last day to live.   Living in readiness is a state of mind. It is having Jesus in our hearts. It is knowing what we will do when, not if, a certain situation should come our way. Living in readiness means seeing things different than how the worlds sees things.   Friends, do you believe Jesus is about to return? Then how do you plan to live the next 24 hours? This week? This year? Are you living in readiness?
