Jesus' Journey from Jericho to Sychar (a village near Shechem)
Detail: Jacob's Well

There's a beautiful old lithograph of a gathering of people at Jacob's well at the Petra Antiquities site The hill in the background is likely Mt. Gerizim, but I don't know for sure. If not, it is Mt. Ebal.

These maps were scanned from The Student Map Manual,* an excellent resource for understanding biblical history. The maps are aligned north and south, but the place names are oriented differently than on most maps. The river on the right is the Jordan, which runs from north to south, emptying into the Dead Sea, which appears at the lower right.

I've traced in the two possible routes that Jesus could have followed from Jericho to Sychar.

The original map does not show the site of Ai, but I have added that information, with a red dot.

The route shown in red would approximate the route followed by Joshua during the early days of the conquest of the Promised Land. The map does not show a road running directly past the site of Ai in Jesus' day. However, maps from the same source, showing the time of Joshua's conquest, show two roads running from Jericho to Ai and then on to Bethel.

There is a large map of roads in first century Palestine at http://www.ubfellowship.org/graphics/gifmap1.htm The fact that I'm pointing you to this map doesn't imply any endorsement of other content at this site, which is connected with a book called the Urantia Book, which I'm vaguely aware of from my research into New Age publications.
