Christmas has no real meaning if you do not personally let Jesus be born in your own hearts. -And how can one truly celebrate the first coming of Jesus and have zero interest in His second Coming? This was the central theme of the message given by Southampton Church Pastor Donnieval Walker to the overflowing audience on Sabbath, December 22, 2002. Pastor Walker explained the true meaning of Christmas and admonished the listeners to not fall into the trap of the materialistic celebration of the western world. The Sabbath services also featured beautiful music by the combined choirs, led by the renowned musician (and no stranger to Southampton) Pastor Sheldon Kilby. The Cantata normally held as a part of the Christmas Sabbath worship service was seperated and to be a special concert in the evening held at the Bermuda Institute auditorium. This concert will also feature Pastor Kilby. Shown above is Pastor Kilby and the combined choir. Season's Greetings to all!
[December 7, 2002] Children's Church: Into God's Hands
The children of Southampton led out in the divine worship on Sabbath December 7, 2002. The Children's Church is just one of the many projects carried out during the course of the year by the Children 's Ministry team led by Sis. Delray Smith. Speakers of the day were Vershon Simmons, GJoshua Gibbons, and Hannah Eggen. Each had approximately twelve minute presentations in which they spoke to the theme of 'Into God's Hand'. First speaker, Vershon, admonished the church to be Holy because they are in God's Hand. He said that it is his aim to please God and that young people are not perfect- but who of us is? GJoshua's contribution was that although we may not always want to do what is right, there are specific things God wants us to do and there are specific ways God wants them to be done. "We must bring to God what he wants us to bring and obedience will bring happiness." In a fitting ending, Hannah let us know that reference to God's hands
and His touch were throughout the Bible. This was shown in the creation
of Man, to His living as a human and eventually bearing a cross and then
being nailed on it. She asked "are your hands being used by God? Take a
Good look at your hands. Put them in God's hands."

While our Americans friends celebrated Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28, Arthur Raynor along with his wife Elena and daughter Alisha had a bit of thanksgiving of their own- they opened their brand-new business Alisha Graphics. He discovered his interest and passion in the graphic design field approximately 10 years ago and has persistently developed it ever since. The service is a one-stop provider for those needing short-run printing. The Raynors have invested in state-of-the-art hardware, software and binding equipment. This combined with Arthur's demonstrated expertise will ensure quality work for all customers. His slogan is: "Sure! We can design and print your ..." [May 11, 2002] A Wake-Up Experience! Dejuan Tull was invited to the pulpit to share with the Southampton congregation an experience that he had over the past week. Returning home from college on Tuesday, May 7 on board a Delta flight from Atlanta, Dejuan had what he referred to as a wake-up experience. Within a minute of takeoff, there was a large explosion from the rear of the plane and a fellow passenger reported seeing fire outside. Smoke began to appear inside the cabin and the plane began to sway and rock. A stewardess screamed and people started to to cry and pray. Dejuan thought it was going to be the end of his life. He prayed for the plane and all on board but he also prayed for his family at home and for forgiveness of his sins as he had never prayed before. As a young man he came to the realization that we often take life for granted and that continued life on this earth is not promised to anyone. The plane successfully circled and landed in Atlanta without harm to anyone on board. Many passengers chose not to immediately continue their flight to Bermuda in order to calm themselvces over the ordeal. Dejuan thanks God for the experience and for a closer relationship with Him.
[April 8, 2002] Celebration of African Unity a Major Success!
Hundreds of African-Bermudians and friends came together and celebrated their ethnic heritage at an African Expo and Fashion Show on Sunday, April 7, 2002. Organized by Sis. Patrice Smith and her husband Bob Smith, this event was hailed as a major success and if attendees have their way, this will not be the last of its kind. The days activities started in grand style with a parade featuring the flags and attire of 55 African countries. The marchers left Whites Grocery and headed to the Bermuda Institute campus where the festivities took place in the new auditorium. The hundreds of man hours that went into the planning was clearly evident.
Many vendors selling African artifacts were orderly displaying their wares,
and the audience was engaged in group activities and displays.
This event was a dream come true for Sis. Patrice. She has been involved in a personal search for her own African links and has been blessed to identify a clear trail back to family in Cape Verde, an island colony of the west coast of Africa. The expo was as educational as it was unusual and it was evident that it was enjoyed by all. Some attendees were just glad for an authentic opportunity to pull out their African clothing and artifacts. Among the many attendees were our Conference President, Dr. Samuel Bulgin, Pastors and the Bermuda Government Minister of Education, the Hon. Paula Cox. Addressing the expo, Minister Cox remarked at the "kaleidoscope of colour" that she saw and mentioned that we as a people "have much to celebrate and respect". She was accompanied by her African-born husband whom she referred to as "her piece of Africa". The Expo and Fashion were only a part of a weekend full of events. Pastor Sednak Kojo Yankson. His theme was- Rooted in God, Grounded in Africa. He thrilled the audiences on Friday evening, Sabbath divine hour and in the Sabbath afternoon as he dealt with diverse topics such as "Is Islam the authentic religion of Africa?", and Is Christianity a white mans religion?". Pastor Sednak Yankson is a dynamic speaker. He was born into a royal
family in Ghana in 1959 and was baptized in 1981. He is a graduate of Oakwood

from the both the choir loft and the balcony.

On one of these missions, he took his family with him to South Africa where they ministered for over six weeks. He has now accepted a call from the Bermuda Conference to serve as a Bible Instructor for the Devonshire Church. In his sermon on Sabbath, December 29, 2001, Elder Santucci admonished the members to 'press on'. He added that while the church was in pretty good shape spiritually, there was still much more work to be done and that we should be about our Father's business. Elder Santucci's wife Karon, and children Kevina and Johnathan will
remain at Southampton during his studies and together they will transfer
to the Devonshire SDA Church upon his return. We are praying for Elder
Santucci and his family and know that success will follow them.
