Called to Music
Ministry
Workshop, Awards
Service and Concert

Since Wednesday
night, November 12, 2008 an inspirational workshop has been taking place at the
Freeport Church sponsored by the Music Ministries Committee of the North Bahamas
Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. The Mission Music Coordinator, Sis. Lynn
Smith, has said, “Music originated from the Creator Himself and speaks to us in
a universal language that has the power to unite people of all cultures and
creeds. Christians believe that religious music has the power to draw us nearer
to God and make us more receptive to the working of the Holy Spirit”. In fact,
Sis. Smith further elucidated the objectives of this workshop and special music
ministry weekend by saying, “It was against this backdrop, and the desire to
highlight the important role that music plays in the worship service, that the
Music Committee of the North Bahamas Mission of Seventh-day Adventists decided
to bring musicians from the various churches together for a music workshop, …
four wonderful nights of sharing musical information and learning beautiful
music together. The Committee’s prayer was also that musicians would realize
that they are called to play a vital role in their churches, and with this
realization would come a determination and commitment to make their music
ministry an offering of praise to the Lord”.
Special
overseas guest presenters for this occasion have been Bro. Roger Mike, composer,
conductor and Minister of Music at the Patmos S.D.A. Church in Orlando, Florida;
Bro. Kevin Long, pianist/organist at the Oakwood University Church, Huntsville,
Alabama and founder of his own music studio, Music Artistry and
co-founder/director of K & M Music; and Sis. Allison Mason-Rolle, songwriter,
minister of music, contralto soloist, workshop consultant and founder of Eagle
Music Ministry Network.
Presenters
at the workshop also included, Dr. Althea McMillan, veteran educator, music
director, author and motivational speaker; Bro. Franz Scott, musician, music
educator, conductor and director of the renowned NBM Pathfinder Band; and Sis.
Lynn Smith, singer, musician, choir conductor, minister of music and workshop
coordinator.
Saturday
afternoon at 5 p.m. a joint Awards Service will be held at the Freeport Church
honouring veteran choir directors and musicians from all of our respective
churches here in Grand Bahama who have rendered invaluable service in the arena
of music ministry for many, many, many years.
The climax
of the Music Workshop will be a Grand Concert featuring the workshop Mass Choir
and other musical artists at the Hilton Outten Convention Center, East Settlers
Way, Freeport, Grand Bahama on Sunday, November 16 at 7 p.m.
Tickets for
the concert have been on sale for several weeks now so we hope you have secured
yours. Tickets are further available from all choir directors at a very low
cost. Remember, tickets not paid for in advance will have to be paid for at the
door. Plan now to enjoy a night of wonderful singing and praise to God!
Finally,
Ellen G. White comments, “music is a precious gift of God, designed to uplift
the thoughts to high and noble themes, to inspire and elevate the soul”
(Education, page 167).
