Since 1993, the New Haven Seventh-day Adventist Church has been serving the community through a program known as the "Midnight Run". The Midnight Run consists of individuals and church groups from area towns who collect clothing and purchase food to distribute on the New Haven Green and a men’s and women’s shelter. The New Haven SDA Church joins the "Run" on the last Monday of each month. With funds donated by the congregation, NHSDA Church purchases sandwich fixings, nuts, fruit, cereal, diapers, and toiletries. Students at Laurel Oaks Adventist School, the New Haven Church’s grade school, prepare sandwiches. School children also package peanuts, pack toiletry items, and wash fruit. These items are loaded into cars along with donated clothing and household articles and distributed that evening. The Run begins just before 8:00 p.m. and makes 3 stops. Distribution takes about an hour and a half. At Christmas time, NHSDA church donates new socks and underwear, so everyone in the men’s shelter can have a new, clean item to wear. The congregation also buys each child staying at the women’s shelter a wrapped Christmas present. There is a great need in New Haven, and the New Haven SDA Church gladly participates in its community outreach. The church not only provides material needs, but can also provide encouragement, friendly conversation, and lots of smiles.
