Nestled in the rolling hills of suburban Hamden, Laurel Oaks Adventist School (LOAS) provides a setting where young people can develop a foundation that will prepare them for life. Its mission is to develop the whole individual by harmoniously nurturing the spiritual, the mental, and the physical natures of its students. The aims of the educational program are to:

  • foster wholesome characters and a love for God and humanity,
  • insure mastery of knowledge and skill for a lifetime of learning,
  • recognize and encourage the full development of individual talents.
  • instill appreciation and manual skill for work,
  • foster healthy habits in daily living.

LOAS is operated by the New Haven Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide a Christian education for students in grades 1-8 living in south central Connecticut. In 1976, the school moved to its current pastoral site on five acres of wooded land. The Building has recently been remodeled and updated, all class rooms have high speed internet access. LOAS is fully accredited by the Southern New England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, which is recognized by the State of Connecticut. Qualified students who support the principles of the school are admitted without regard to gender, race or ethnicity.

Mission Statement

“To increase in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.”

Administration

Laurel Oaks Adventist School is administered by a committee whose members are appointed by the two primary contributing churches, currently the New Haven SDA Church and the Mt. Zion SDA Church. The LOAS Committee oversees the direction of the school program and maintains its overall operation.

Admissions

Students must first apply for admission through a local Seventh-day Adventist church. Once an application has been approved by a church, it is forwarded to the LOAS School Committee for final approval of admission to the school.

Curriculum

In addition to the traditional 3-R's, course instruction includes: Bible, fine arts, health, home arts. An active physical education program emphasizes development of personal skill and teamwork. In addition, opportunities for developing musical and artistic talents are available.

Service

LOAS students learn the unique joy of service and participation in the community by reaching out to neighbors and helping those in need. This is accomplished through varied school activities such as preparing lunches for the homeless, and befriending the elderly in nursing homes with visits and letters. Such service to others not only fosters responsible citizenship, but it also identifies new friends from unlikely places.
