To ask the question, "Which way is up?" will give you as many different answers nearly as there are people--for each determines the answer from what they observe--from their perspective of the world in which they have come to know. The only way for there to be any agreement--and for us to actually be correct--is for us to have the right point of reference. For the universe, God's throne is that point of reference. Where are you in relation to His center? Then, knowing His and your position, you can calculate, which way is up? There are two systems operative in this world--two points of reference. There is the Garden of Eden and the jungle of thorns and thistles. There is the universal law of God--the law of love; and there is the law of the demonic--the law of claw and tooth. Your EGO-VALUE system is based on one of these EGO systems. Mat 20:25 "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them." 26 "But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;" :27 "And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:" 28 "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." Two totally different value systems--they could not be farther from each other. Yet, they are sometimes mingled. What may appear as self-sacrifice could be an attempt for domination--for self-importance. And no individual has motives that are totally unmixed. We live in a garden of Eden that is no longer Eden. And so many people have learned to behave or survive by observing the jungle. Nature alone was inadequate, since it was distorted by the Fall--so "God sent His Son into the world" to give us the correct point of reference. Jesus contrasted these two value systems again when He ate with the disciples Thursday before His crucifixion. Over three years with Jesus, and they still had the problem--were still looking for first place--operating on an EGO system that was ruining how they dealt with each other--even in these precious moments. Jesus observes with great disappointment--His disciples refusing to serve. So Jesus becomes their servant. We refer to this as the humiliation of Christ--He humbled Himself. But by which value system did He humble Himself? By their value system--not His. Never was Jesus more great, than when He washed His disciples' feet--by heaven's value system. THIS WAS NOT AN ACT OF HUMILITY--IT WAS AN ACT OF EXALTATION--if you have the right value system. It is the value system that caused Him to "humble Himself and become obedient unto death, even the death of the cross"--revealing His greatness! So, "Which way is up?" Jesus tells us--shows us--that the way up is when we wash each other's feet--and in all the ways we can do that. John 13:12 "So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?" John 13:13 "Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am." 14 "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet." 15 "For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you." 16 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him." 17 "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
