Knot Tying

Submitted by Moorhead Adventurers

In May of this year we worked on the Knot Tying Award for our Adventurers.
For this project we took advantage of information gained from our involvement
with Pathfinders.

The Pathfinders have knot tying boards and many different knots.
The Adventurers only had 7 knots to do and also had to learn the three parts of a rope.
We took some heavy cardboard and cut it into 8.5"x11" sheets or slightly larger.
The Adventurers were then shown how to make the knots, with the use of the Florida
Adventurer manual and some outside sources we located at a local book store.
They glued them to the board.
Labeled them accordingly.
They also put their name on the board with a Label.
Immediately upon the completion of their project, we presented them with their
well earned Knot Tying Award.
We posted them at the next Pot Luck for the Congregation to see.

To have your "Knot Board" double as both a training tool and display mount,
the RedWing club came up with a new type of knot board, shown in the picture.
If the whole club is doing knots, make a few slots for the younger ones,
and more for the older ones.

Description ( in case the picture does not come out ... ):
For each knot that you want to display, cut ( drill ) 2 holes or slots in the board.
From the back, thread one end of the string through one of the holes, and the other
end of the string through the other hole. You can now use this to practice with,
and no glue is needed for mounting, unless you want to make the knots permanent,
then put some glue on the knots and let dry.

Addendum by Conf Director: Make the holes small enough, and use 2 different
color strings. Secure one end of each string to the back of the board,
while threading the other end through the board ... excellent teaching tool.
