One With a Touch of Evangelism
(Presented on the occasion of officially becoming a Company)

Seventh-day Adventist Christians do not take lightly the instruction in Hebrews 10:25: "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching". Therefore, naturally when a number of isolated Adventist believers reside in proximity to one another they sequentially organize as a company for fellowship and worship with the usual sequel of an organized church.

However, the history of the Mill Woods Seventh-Day Adventist Company does not precisely fall into this general category of organized companies. The foregoing historical sketch amplifies their peculiarity. The gem thought for the formal establishment of a Seventh-day Adventist presence in Mill Woods originated in the home of Kojo and Theresa Akabua (now living in Kentucky, USA). For about a year and a half prior to the start of the company in Mill Woods, the Akabuas would host fellowship meals in their home every Sabbath. Quite a number of Adventist families would attend regularly, including the Donkors, Robinson, Williams, Matthews, Assigbes, Isons and students from CUC. One of the main features of these fellowship meals would be to spend time in the study of God´s word and prayer following our meal. This went on for a while and attracted quite a gathering, especially of the folks living in Mill Woods.

It was during one such time of study and prayer that the Holy Spirit generated the idea that we should consider the formation of a church in the area. The thought was considered and prayed about and the more we did, the more we felt convinced that this should be a reality. It must be mentioned that at the same time Brother Alfred Shaw was also burning with the desire to have an Adventist presence in this area; his persistent appeals to individuals, leadership in West Edmonton SDA Church and the brethren at the Alberta Conference were intensified.

In January 2001, the West Edmonton SDA Church held its second strategic planning seminar at which time the idea was formally embraced that West Edmonton church should extend its boundaries and make plans to form a church in Mill Woods. Brother Alfred Shaw was instrumental in seeking out and finding the present facility as the place of worship. We will forever remain grateful to our Christian friends and our landlord (Mill Woods United Church) who graciously permitted us to use their Sanctuary and its facilities for our services. Pastor Williams and the West Edmonton SDA board set about to formalize plans for the commencement of the company. The first Sabbath, April 7th, 2001 was set as the date for the official commencement of the church service in Mill Woods.

Charter members included Noble Donkor and family, Sylvanus and Zelannie Assigbe, Ralph Robinson, Joan Ison, Alfred Shaw, the Hewson family, Zululi Agboli, P.Y. and Kay Pappachan, Janet Lauzon (from South Edmonton SDA), the McGueys, Ila Joe Woods, Eunice Reid, Garry and Caroline Walters (from Leduc SDA), etc. Numerous visitors from the community and about eight members from the Mill Woods United church attended our first Sabbath worship; there were 43 persons present. The first song service and Bible study was by Ralph Robinson, and the first sermon was by Pastor Williams. Melissa Williams and Dorothy Vernon played the piano that morning.

The first leaders included Ralph Robinson, Noble Donkor, Joan Ison and Sylvanus Assigbe. Later, Sister Reid was asked to provide leadership. We have had tremendous support and leadership from several individuals and groups, especially Pastor Arserude, Pastor Ambrose (he served as our Bible worker for one summer), Pastor Lawrence and his dedicated team of Theology students from CUC (especially Fitzroy Radlein who has volunteered to help in any capacity), Pastor Adams (Alberta Conference of SDA), Leroy Kydd (South Edmonton SDA church elder), Edith Keilbough (Central Edmonton SDA church elder), and, of course, from West Edmonton SDA (our mother church with the various singing groups, elder´s support and member´s support), and numerous others. Pastor Williams was transferred to Toronto, ON in 2002 and Pastor Horell took over the mantle this year.

Over the course of our existence, our modus operandus has been "all-hands-on-deck ". Everyone is busy in Mill Woods SDA. We had a successful gospel concert in the beginning. We have distributed tracts and visited homes far and wide in the community. Some of our members are still holding Bible studies in the community. Our home-based Wednesday night prayer meetings continue to inspire us. Our sumptuous Sabbath fellowship meals are a regular feature; except the first Sabbath of every month when we gather to pray for our friends and the work.

As we celebrate this historic day of officially organizing into a company, our prayer is threefold; that the Lord should: 1) continue to use us to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, 2) extend our territory, and 3) send others to Macedonia to help.

Glory be to God. AMEN.

"To proclaim the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ to our community and to nurture and support individuals into a loving, saving and satisfying relationship with Him through loving service, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship." (Voted Sabbath February 12th 2005)

It is our goal that the open fellowship we share has depth, is uplifting, and is filled with love. We encourage young, old, women, men, children, those searching, the soon-to-be-converted and long-time committed Christians alike to continue in a growing relationship with our Almighty Father.

Micah 6:8 (NIV) states:
"He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Our belief is that salvation is available to all by grace through faith alone, and that the fruit of that grace is reflected in our acting justly (James 2:16-24), in our loving mercy (Ephesians 4:32, Galatians 5:2-24), and in our walking humbly with our God (Luke 18:11-17).

As part of the world Seventh-day Adventist Church, we also share several bible-based Fundamental Beliefs.
