Weiers,
Is Dr. Tony Pantalone an Adventist?
If he wrote about SA church history in general, did he also research SDA church history?
I would like to contact him, I just want to be able to ask right questions.

I would also like to suggest Dr. Tony Pantalone.
He received his doctorate in SA - Church history from UDW at the beginning
of this year.
I've spoken to him and he is very interested. It would be good if somebody
(perhaps less familiar) could e-mail him and invite his comments. I am sure
he will agree to give some inputs.

His dissertation was on SDA church history in SA. A recent Maranatha article

Subject: Marriage
Dear friends,
Few months ago when a good friend, Modise Sedupane, got married I felt impressed to write some few words directed to him. In December, two of my friends (they are not really friends, but brothers) who are members of this list, will be getting married:
Matodzi Ratshimbilani (12-Dec-1999)
Sam Mthimkulu (16-Dec-1999)
In this age when marriages last only few months or few years at best, I get mixed feelings when young people decides to get married. I am happy for them, yet do they know what they are getting into? I think there is much emphasis on getting married and not on staying married. I wish there were more people encouraging young people to stay married than are those encouraging them to get married. Many have been pushed into marriage and when they get there they don't know what to do.
Here is my message to those who are contemplating getting married, I hope that even some of us who have been married for a while will receive some encouragement:
The Marriage School
By Mashudu Jeremiah Malozwe Ravhengani
So young man, Welcome to the school called marriage,
A school from which you will never graduate
A school without a break or a free period
A school where no one is allowed to drop out,
A school which you will have to attend every day of your life,
A school where there is no sick leave or holidays.
A school founded by God,
on the foundation of love,
The walls are made out of trust,
The door made out of acceptance,
The windows made out understanding
The furniture made out of blessings
The roof made out of faith
Before you forget, you are just a student not the principal, Christ is the principal
Even in times of storms, don't be unwise and run outside; remember this school is the safest place to be.
Never go to sleep before completing your assignments for the day
Never forget the C-word, Communicate, communicate to your classmate and also communicate to the Principal
If you find something in your classmate that you do not appreciate;
Remember your classmate is also just a student like you, not a graduate, God is not finished with her yet. So take it as a challenge and work on it together.
Do not forget to study, never read your Bible (the main textbook), but study it
Start each day with a sacred assembly and end it the same way.
Sometimes you will feel like not attending classes, yet you have to.
When tempted to quit find courage in the Lord to continue.
Some tests and exams may be tough but remember the Principal knows how much you can bear.
However, it is a school better than any other,
It is one of the best schools on earth; joy, peace and happiness accompany each lessons of the day.
Different subjects are offered in this school, yet love is the major subject,
After all the years of theorizing about it, now you have a chance to practice it.
To be loved is a good thing, but to love is a greatest privilege of them all
Marriage is a place of love, so love your wife,
When tempted to raise your voice let love hold your mouth
Let love overthrow pride and selfishness and let it reign in your house
Do not hold back any love from her. Don't meet her halfway but go all the way
Love as though that's your only hope for your survival, and it is.
Young man, listen to the words of wisdom.
(feel free to copy and distribute the above message)
The King is coming!
Jeremiah

From what I know the SDA church is not a member of any religious body South
Africa. However individual pastor have co-operated and interacted very well
with the SACC.
I think the reason for not being a member of any of existing bodies boils
down to the manner we have been indoctrinated.
That's my thinking Alvin.

What theological (if any) reasons do we use to support our "non-participatory"
position. Because as far as I know the General Conference has left such
decisions (of joining or not joining national councils of churches) in the hands
of the individual Union Conferences i.e. the SAUC (Southern Africa Union
Conference of the SDA) can, after careful consideration and wide ranging
discussions/debates in the church, decide to join without "asking" for
permission from Silver Springs, Maryland.
I haven't seen the constitution of the SACC (South African Council of Churches)
yet but from their publications (also on http://www.sacc.org.za) I think we can
identify with all their objectives and plans.
Another issue - as from December 1 to 8, 1999 the Parliament of World Religions
will be convening in Cape Town.
The motto will be:
"A New Day Dawning: Spiritual Yearnings and Sacred Possibilities"
There will be a lot of activities going on (workshops etc.)
Should Adventists participate or not?
Is there any "danger" in taking part or are we missing out on opportunities by
isolating ourselves?
Alvin.

East Timor: Displaced Inhabitants Helped by Adventist Aid Agency
Jakarta, Indonesia ....[ANN]
As the rainy season threatens the lives of displaced Timorese living in
low lying makeshift camps in West Timor, the Adventist Development and
Relief Agency (ADRA) is acting quickly to establish safe, temporary
housing for the most vulnerable of families.
"While the push is to get as many people back to East Timor as
possible, as quickly as possible, it is going to be a slow process as
repatriation is expected to take several months," says Murray Millar,
ADRA Indonesia associate director. "An interim measure is vital to
limit the growing number of deaths that are already occurring in the
existing camps."
This week, ADRA started organizing provisions for a new, safer campsite
in West Timor. The site, located in Kupang District, about 10 miles (16
kilometers) from Kupang City, is well suited to wet season conditions
and is expected to house up to 1,000 high-risk families for up to six
months. Vulnerable families with women and children will be given
preference.
A volunteer water engineer from Australia is expected on Sunday to
begin siting suitable locations for contractors to begin drilling a
well to supply water for the camp. Elie Gasagara, who recently assisted
ADRA's programs in Kosovo, will arrive on Monday to begin managing the
program.
"We are hoping that within three to four weeks the camp will be ready
for occupancy," adds Millar. "We're also praying that the rains will
hold back to enable this work to proceed unhindered."
Once the camp is finished, the World Food Programme (WFP) will provide
staple food rations to the people, with support from ADRA's
international network, the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) and other nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The
new camp is also located adjacent to an ADRA health clinic and a
Seventh-day Adventist school.
"Teachers from the school have agreed to work an additional shift to
enable children to gain some education while they are waiting to either
return to East Timor or resettle within West Timor," explains Millar.
ADRA Indonesia reports that since the August 30 referendum on
independence, an estimated 500,000 out of 890,000 residents have been
displaced, with up to 200,000 seeking refuge in West Timor.
"A majority of the displaced people are living out in the open under
crude shelters and must contend with a landscape which offers sparse
vegetation for cover, and little or no drainage," says Millar. "It is
one of the most barren places I have visited in Asia."
In late September, more than 40 ADRA staff and volunteers helped to
deliver 2,700 food parcels to displaced families. Each family parcel
contained rice, green beans, cans of fish, and a packet of milk. The
parcels, valued at nearly US$13,000, were funded by ADRA's office in
Australia. [Beth Schaefer]
New College Opens in Ukraine
Kiev, Ukraine ... [ANN]
On October 15, 1999, the Ukrainian Seventh-day Adventist Church opened
the Ukrainian College of Arts and Sciences. The institution has
government approval to offer Bachelor degrees in Business
Administration and English. This institution is the first private
college to be authorized to offer tertiary level degrees with state
recognition. There are several seminaries in the country offering
non-accredited programs.
"Our Church in the Ukraine is pleased to be able to open a college to
provide Christian education to the youth of the Church, as well as
non-Adventist students," said Anatoli Zhalovaga. Eighty-six students
began classes at the beginning of October under national Seventh-day
Adventist teachers.
Located 20 kilometers south of Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, the college
property originally served as a recreation center for families of
employees of military factories in the area. It was acquired with
several buildings that are being refurbished to be used as classrooms,
offices, student residences, staff housing, as well as a cafeteria,
auditorium, library, and other services.
The Ukrainian College of Arts and Sciences is the 95th institution of
higher learning authorized and recognized by the Seventh-day Adventist
Church. [Enrique Becerra]
Church Satellite Outreach Live From New York
New York, New York, USA .... [ANN]
1,000 persons attended the opening night of the satellite broadcast
Millennium of Prophecy Seminar in Manhattan Center Studios on October
15.
Pastor Doug Batchelor is speaking nightly, except Monday and Thursday
evenings, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., through November 13. Batchelor
emphasizes the importance of confirming what listeners hear in the
meeting by studying Bible truths for themselves. It is an approach New
Yorkers seem to appreciate. In a city with so many voices and pressured
appeals, people appear to be welcoming a call to "see for themselves"
what God is saying.
Transmissions were carried by Adventist Communication Network (ACN) and
Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN) in North America, with 3ABN
also reaching Europe and the north of Africa, and Adventist Global
Communication Network (AGCN) extending the signal to the world. An
estimated 5,000 sites are receiving the series worldwide, with 14
languages transmitted simultaneously and others planned by countries or
areas either during the series or at a later time. [ANN/Betty Cooney]
Conscientious Objectors Can Now Perform Service in Adventist Churches
Tampere, Finland ... [ANN]
The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Finland has obtained the right to
become a place of service for conscientious objectors. The decree,
signed by the President of the Republic of Finland, came into force on
October 1, 1999.
"This means that an individual who wants to perform his military
service in a non-military capacity can do so by serving in the
Seventh-day Adventist Church and its institutions," comments Joel
Niininen, secretary and communication director of the Adventist Church
in Finland.
Pastor Pekka Pohjola, president of the Finland Union Conference
considers this "a significant change towards equal treatment of
churches in Finland. Up until this year only the Lutheran and the
Orthodox churches have had this right. Now the government has
recognized the right of certain minority churches, if they meet
specified requirements, to be accepted as service places of
conscientious objectors. Our Adventist young men are now able to serve
within our own Church. To some it may be a spark of inspiration to
commit their lives to the ministry." [Joel Niininen/ANR/ANN]
Brazil: Church to Distribute 14 Million Pamphlets in 2000
Florianópolis, Brazil ... [ANN]
On the occasion of the anniversary of the discovery of Brazil, the
Seventh-day Adventist Church in the south of the country plans to
distribute 4 million pamphlets with the title: "On Brazil's 500th
Anniversary, New Discoveries for You."
This pamphlet will be only one of the four that will be distributed
during the year 2000 in the South region of the country. According to
Oliveira Pires, director of Personal Ministries for the Adventist
Church in south Brazil, in addition to these pamphlets, the Church
intends to distribute 292,000 Bible courses and more than 10 million
other religious publications during the year 2000. [ANN/ASN Staff with

ADVENTIST SINGLES (Maureen Morroff)
I am interested in establishing a 'Hitching Post for Adventist singles'. It would appear that in the States many churches cater for singles in the congregation - single parents / divorcees / widowed, etc. However there are far more single persons, young and old, who do not have the opportunity of ever getting to meet others in the same situation due to circumstances beyond their control i.e. distance from fellow believers, church full of 'old' married couples, (Church full of well-meaning matchmakers who put you off any potential good match!) etc etc!. Many have opted to marry out of the church rather than to be longely, which has led to even greater loneliness in a mismatched marriage or worse - divorce and children who eventually choose the way of the world. If you are single and would like to make contact with others of your status, please feel free to e-mail me your particulars no matter where in the world you are! i.e. Name, date of birth, profession, marital status (single/divorced/widowed) and place of residence. If you are not interested or do not qualify because you are happily 'attached", but know of someone who may be interested - please pass this on or delete. It may take a while, but lets see if we can get this thing working and get the lines humming between our lonely souls out there! This may take some time to get off the ground - but is worth a try! I promise to get back to you as soon as I get a few responses, which I hope will be soon! It will then be up to you to take it up from there!
God bless
