City square named after Ellen White
The city council of the Southern Brazilian city of Curitiba A city council in Brazil
has given unanimous approval to name one of its squares after Adventist pioneer
Ellen White. Curitiba, the capital of Paraná province, is considered a model city
because of its care for ecological balance, the percentage of green areas in the
city, the efficiency of public transportation, as well as a large number of squares
and parks, cleanliness, urban development and security. The Ellen G. White
Square is in a popular location on a daily exercise route for cycling and running.
The square will in inaugurated in November. Zukowski adds that such a decision
was greeted with enthusiasm by the Church in Curitiba. The initiative to
approach the city council came from Tarso Furlan, a church member in Curitiba
who was baptized as a Seventh-day Adventist a few months ago. He was
impressed by the books written by Ellen White, and felt that the population at
large should also get to know her important contribution as an Adventist
Christian visionary, writer and church leader. The square will feature a sculpture
of Ellen G. White, gardening and plaques telling about her.

Adventists tortured in jail
Adventists found not guity for desecrating a Catholic church in Cape Verde were
tortured while they were held in jail for 12 months awaiting trial "They have
been tortured by all kinds of methods, including electric shocks, to try to force
them to confess to a crime that they had not committed," says Felix Monteiro,
president of the Adventist Church in the Cape Verde islands. "But God gave
them strength and a great deal of courage to stay on the side of truth." As
reported earlier, the three Adventists, José Maria Monteiro Rodrigues, Jorge
Adalberto Ramos Tavares, and Benvindo da Cruz Ramos, were declared
innocent of all charges brought against them. Judge Dr. Helena Barreto stated
that "the only crime which the three Adventists had committed, if that constitutes
a crime, was to be Seventh-day Adventists."

Pastors receive AIDS training
More than 600 Adventist pastors and their wives have received training in AIDS
awareness and counseling regarding HIV infection. Trainers included doctors and
health experts from the U.S. and Australia, as well locals. "This event marks a
new day in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea," says Percy
Harrold, health director for the Adventist Church's South Pacific Division. "No
longer can the church bury its head in the sand. No longer can pastors say 'I can
only give the Biblical stand.' Now pastors are equipped to give practical advice as
well in preventing HIV infection."

PUC still top in California
Pacific Union College this week was ranked as the top college in California by
"US News and World Report." This is the sixth straight year of top ranking for
PUC. PUC was ranked in the top five for "Best Values" among liberal arts
colleges in the Western U.S. -- a ranking based on a ratio of quality to price. It
was also ranked among the top ten most "ethnically diverse" campuses in the
Western U. S. PUC scored well in all ranking categories, especially in academic
quality, faculty-to-student ratio, and student diversity. PUC ranked in the top ten
among all American colleges and universities for acceptance into medical school.

Nutshell News
VOP Newsletter from Heather Tredoux (heather@vop.co.za)

Dear Friends, near and far (by far I mean the Jubys in Mongolia),
It was wonderful to receive e-mail responses to our first Nutshell News
sent out last month and to the C Fred Clarke e-mail letter I sent prior
to that. A sincere thank you from all of us at the Bible School. In
this "edition" of Nutshell I would like to tell you a story, which ended
last week. It surprised and touched all of us at the VOP. Here it is:

THE GIFT Earlier this year the KwaZulu Natal-Free State Conference
requested that our Zulu Bible Instructor come and conduct an
evangelistic campaign in an unentered area called Appelsbosch. David
loves evangelistic work and we call him our fiery evangelist whose lips
have been touched with the burning coal of Isa.6:6. He is also a quiet
and consecrated child of God.

The distance between the Bible School (Cape Town) and Appelsbosch
(KwaZulu) is 1753 kilometres. David's car is about twenty years old and
has done sterling work but has seen better days. I advised him to go by
bus rather than with his car. David, who is also optimistic by nature,
opted to take his car. He understandably wanted to take his wife and
family with him since the campaign fell in the June/July winter
holidays. "David, if you travel by car, the VOP is not in a position to
carry any repair costs." "God will take care of me", was his reply and
he uttered these words with profound faith that made me feel humble.

Every few days David would phone in his reports: Five hundred attending
- numbers growing every night - sixty to receive VOP certificates -
three rallies with groups of students in other parts of KwaZulu. He
didn't say much about the car. ...

When David returned we sat together in my office and he gave me a full
report. I wrote as he spoke as I didn't want to miss a thing. There
were many stirring stories of souls won for Jesus. Seventeen joined the
baptismal class. David continued, concentrating on the effort and the
rallies and the good students and decisions that had been made for the
Lord but I could read between the words that his car had given him
endless trouble. Then he came to the last Sunday when Pastor Dladla had
helped him (by now David was exhausted) by preaching the sermon there.
After the meeting when Ps Dladla asked how David was getting home, he
heard about the car troubles and how the car had eventually come to a
grinding halt somewhere in KwaZulu. Ps Dladla kindly gave David a lift
home. David purchased tickets to return to Cape Town by bus. The next
day David's brother came to where David was staying and said, "Pastor
Dladla wants to see you. He asked me to bring you to his house." So
the two men set off.

As they arrived at the Pastor's house, he came out carrying a bunch of
keys. "David", he said, "I felt impressed yesterday to give you one of
my cars. I discussed this with my wife and we both agreed that this is
what the Lord wants us to do. Here are the keys." David said, "Am I
dreaming? How can I accept this?" The pastor said, "Read your Bible
and see what it says about when one has two coats ..." David's voice
trailed off, then: "Would you like to see the car, just look out of
your window and look down and you will see it" I said, "I am not going
to look out of the window, we are going downstairs and I want to see it
and feel it." It is a beautiful white 1993 Mazda. The Miracle Mazda!

God bless you Pastor Dladla and all of you who read this.

Sincerely
Heather Tredoux

Subject: divorce?

Dear friends,

It has been very quite out there.
Why is there such a high degree of divorces in the church?
Is divorce and option for a Christian?

He will come!

Bangisi,

This should be an interesting one. A while ago I had occasion to chat to an
atheist and instead of telling them what I believed, I asked them what they
believed. Of course they gave me the expected reasons for their disbelief. I
suggest to the members of the list, as I did to the atheist, that one
requires a bigger leap of faith to be and to remain an atheist than to be a
Christian.

The problem is that to have faith, one needs an object of faith, which
leaves the atheist ....where???

Somebody please help make sense of atheism to me.

Our redemption is closer now than it ever was before!

Ramodise

Jerry,

I met someone at lunch time today who particularly told me that she is an
atheist. I thought of the discussion on evangelism that has already been
discussed. I have been preaching the gospel of a living God to this
particular lady to a point of my showing her books to read. She would not
accept anything because she is atheist. The other day she gave me a
religious note that she got from a church she had visited.

My plea to the whole discussion team is find a way of preaching differently
to a so-called atheist.

God bless you all.
