In the judgment men will not be condemned because they conscientiously believed a lie, but because they did not believe the truth, because they neglected the opportunity of learning what is truth. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 15.

If we keep the Lord ever before us, allowing our hearts to go out in thanksgiving and praise to Him, we shall have a continual freshness in our religious life. Our prayers will take the form of a conversation with God as we would talk with a friend. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 30.

Trials patiently borne, blessings gratefully received, meekness, kindness, mercy, and love, habitually exhibited, are the lights that shine forth in the character before the world, revealing the contrast with the darkness that comes of the selfishness of the natural heart. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 59.

As the tempest leaves unharmed the lowly flower of the valley, while it uproots the stately tree upon the mountaintop, so those who have maintained their integrity in humble life may be dragged down to the pit by the temptations that assail worldly success and honor. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 77.

Oh, how often we yield to temptation because we do not keep our eye upon Jesus! -- Conflict and Courage, p. 85.

In order to receive God's help, man must realize his weakness and deficiency; he must apply his own mind to the great change to be wrought in himself. . . . Many never attain to the position that they might occupy, because they wait for God to do for them that which He has given them power to do for themselves. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 86.

Unbelief whispers, "Let us wait till the obstructions are removed, and we can see our way clearly:" but faith courageously urges an advance, hoping all things, believing all things. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 92.

So the dealings of Providence bring to the unbelieving, darkness and despair, while to the trusting soul they are full of light and peace. The path where God leads the way may lie through the desert or the sea, but it is a safe path. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 92.

The daily blessings that we receive from the hand of God, and above all else the death of Jesus to bring happiness and heaven within our reach, should be a theme for constant gratitude. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 93.

The Lord can use most effectually those who are most sensible of their own unworthiness and inefficiency. He will teach them to exercise the courage of faith. He will make them strong by uniting their weakness to His might, wise by connecting their ignorance with His wisdom. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 126.

The real greatness of the man is measured by the power of the feelings that he controls, not by those that control him. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 132.

Those who are most ready to excuse or justify themselves in sin are often most severe in judging and condemning others. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 154.

Every failure on the part of the children of God is due to their lack of faith. When shadows encompass the soul, when we want light and guidance, we must look up: there is light beyond the darkness. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 166.

What bondage so terrible as that of him who is given over to the control of the worst of tyrants--himself! -- Conflict and Courage, p. 171.

It is impossible for us in our own strength to maintain the conflict; and whatever diverts the mind from God, whatever leads to self-exaltation or to self-dependence, is surely preparing the way for our overthrow. The tenor of the Bible is to inculcate distrust of human power and to encourage trust in divine power. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 177.

When the worldly possession is swept away, the believer will rejoice in his heavenly treasure, the riches that cannot be lost in any earthly disaster. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 189.

Affliction and adversity may cause sorrow, but it is prosperity that is most dangerous to spiritual life. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 194.

In the valley of humiliation, where men depend on God to teach them and to guide their every step, there is comparative safety. But the men who stand, as it were, on a lofty pinnacle, and who, because of their position, are supposed to possess great wisdom--these are in gravest peril. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 194.

For the disheartened there is a sure remedy--faith, prayer, work. . . . In the darkest days, when appearances seem most forbidding, fear not. Have faith in God. He knows your need. He has all power. His infinite love and compassion never weary. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 213.

Satan is playing the game of life for every soul. All over the world men and women are looking wistfully to heaven. Prayers and tears and inquiries go up from souls longing for light, for grace, for the Holy Spirit. Many are on the verge of the kingdom, waiting only to be gathered in. -- Conflict and Courage, p. 332.
