Derek
R. Furbert, Treasurer
In the
late 1970's, after a divine encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ, which
was brought about largely through the power of Bro. Furbert's praying wife,
he accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour.
Sensing
the call of the Lord to become equipped for wider service, Bro. Furbert,
together with his wife and children went off to West Indies College in
1981 to pursue higher education. Transferring to Atlantic Union College
three years later, Bro. Furbert graduated from AUC in 1986 with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Accounting and Business Administration. In 1988 he
graduated with a Masters degree in Business Administration from Bentley
College, Waltham, Massachusetts.
In 1995
he was called to serve as manager of the Adventist Book Center. During
his tenure, the Bermuda ABC achieved highest annual per capita book sales
in the North American Division on two occasions and second highest on one
occasion. A computerized point-of-sale system was installed and gross sales
by the ABC exceeded one million dollars for the first time in their history.
In November
1999 Bro. Furbert was called to serve as Treasurer of the Bermuda Conference.
In January of 2001 he was asked by the Executive Committee of the Conference
to assume additional responsibilities as Secretary/Treasurer of the Conference,
and during the triennial session held on September 9, 2001, he was elected
to serve as Treasurer of the Conference.
