Purpose of student's handbook

The Belize Adventist Junior College Hand Book is prepared for the benefit of the youths who are studious with high and noble ideals. Our aim is the harmonious development of the physical, mental, social and spiritual faculties.

Students with the aim of achieving these objectives will be successful.

This handbook contains information about rules and regulations that govern our school programmes and services.

You are encouraged to read this handbook carefully and keep it available, as a handy reference at all times.

Belize Adventist Junior College encourages every students to actively participate in the spiritual, and social campus life so that educational growth will be complete and an enjoyable one.

General Information

The Belize Adventist Junior College is located in the village of Calcutta in the District of Corozal, and is presently operating on the Belize Adventist College Campus. This institution opened its doors to serve the public since September of 1999.

BAJC operates under the leadership of the Department of education of the Belize Mission of Seventh-day Adventist, with permission from the Ministry of Education.

We open our doors to all students who would like to pursue an Associate Degree—and to have any of the educational qualification we offer at this level.

BAJC has become the first tertiary– Seventh-day Adventist Institution in Belize. Since then, this institution has been successfully serving the community of Corozal and other young people from out district.

Academic Information

The Belize Adventist Junior College is a Tertiary institution consisting of four semesters, or two years of study, recognized by the Ministry of Education and Sports in the country of Belize.

BAJC is presently offering three areas of study along with its majors in the following concentrations:

I           Business Administration

            a. Management

            b. Accounting

II         Arts and Science

            a. Education

            b. Biology/Chemistry

            c. General Studies

III        Information Technology

            a. A+ Computer Engineering

            b. Graphic Design

            c. Computer Science

General objectives of BAJC

1. Spiritual Development:

As a Christian institution the Belize Adventist Junior College seeks to develop in the students a clear understanding of its philosophy, that aims to develop a steadfast faithfulness to the Bible teaching principles, as the solution to all human moral, social and personal problems.

2. Academically:

The Belize Adventist Junior College aims to develop in students an awareness of his or her potential to strive for high, intellectual, and professional standard; that our changing society is demanding in this 21st century. Constructive independent thinkers, using the basic principles of honesty, and self-esteem; will express him or her self effective and wise.

3. Civic and Cultural Development:

A sincere love for our country, and people, remembering that the Belizean society is made of many races but one people, will help in the development of the students civic pride and intelligent understanding of the principles and policies of government and society.

Standard of conduct and penalties

 

High principles of integrity, courtesy and honesty are expected from students attending BAJC. The obligations to pressure the academic, social and religious standards is the student’s responsibility. As a citizen and student you are responsible to know and obey the laws that govern the country of Belize.

Students have the obligations to know the regulations and policies that governs BAJC.

Violating these regulations and policies would require disciplinary, action or intervention. Students are accepted at BAJC According to recommendation of good, character, and the demonstration of their willingness to participate and abide with the institution’s Code of Conduct.

Falsifying Documents

Students found guilty falsifying signature, transcripts, recommendation letters or any other documents will not be admitted to BAJC and if admitted before found out will be expelled if found guilty.

Cheating—If students are found.

Cheating, in exams, quizzes, test, assignment or engages in plagiarism. He/she will be taken to the Head of Department, who in turn will make recommendation to the teacher of the subject involved, if student continues this behaviour, he/she will be given a failing grade, and case will be submitted

To Disciplinary commission who may recommend expulsion.

Vandalism

Students caught destroying school property, stealing or damaging fellow students belongings- will be required to pay or replace, case will be taken to disciplinary committee, consequence may result in expulsion.

Dress Code

Students are expected to dress with modesty and appropriately for classes and all other occasions respectively. Administration and staff reserve the right to advise students about clothing which are not appropriate for the occasion: the use of jewellery, both for male and female, are prohibited in the classroom.

For males: (trousers), the sagging of trousers, short pants, jeans are not allowed in the classroom. Shirts with immoral paintings. Sandals or slippers.

For females:  jeans, see-through blouses, mini skirts, backless blouses and any tight fitting clothing are allowed in the classroom.

Social Behaviour on Campus

A friendly intermingling of our young men and women are expected and desirable. However, unrestricted association, sentimentalism, and secluded meeting places of couples of the opposite sex are forbidden on campus, married couples are expected to behave themselves prudent and discrete.

A mature, responsible behaviour is expected at all times.

The use of alcohol, tobacco, unlicensed drugs in all its forms, are prohibited. Any student caught using these substances on campus will be reported to the Dean who in turn will ask the user or student to leave the campus on one week of suspension on a second offence will have to face expulsion.

Illegal Weapons on Campus

Student are not allowed to carry any kind of weapons or any kind of instrument that can be used as a weapon. The use of these will be treated and dealt with as a criminal offence.

Violent, and abusive behaviour inflicted on both male and female, whether physical or verbal will be considered a criminal offence, students guilty of this offence will be taken to the Discipline Committee who in turn may recommend expulsion.

Graduation requirements

Students who are planning to be graduated from BAJC must comply satisfactorily with the following graduation requirements.

  1. Complete all core course requirements earning at least a grade of 65-69%, D = 1.00

  2. Complete all professional courses and earn a grade not less than 70% C = 2.00, G.P.A.

  3. All bills with school should be paid before final examinations.

  4. Student must have a clear transcript of grades in all 4 semesters with a G.P.A. of 2.00.

  5. Student must have studied the two last semesters at BAJC.

Student must have and maintained a satisfactory record of conduct, to participate in graduation exercises.

Student academic record for graduation

All second year or fourth semester students records, should be submitted to the Dean’s office after the results of the final exams are turned in to the Secretary’s office by the teachers according to stipulated date. After which Dean and Appointed commission will review each record to determine whether the student have met graduation requirements.

The result of this review will be communicated to the student by letter from the Dean’s office

Students who meet graduation requirements must then pay the set graduation fee.

Financial Obligations

Student must settle all financial obligations, and (with the college) return all college property loan to him such as charts, rented textbooks, or library books. otherwise, all documents like transcripts and diploma will be withheld until this commitment is complied with.

Graduation Exercise

Candidates for graduation are required to participate in all the graduation stipulated by BAJC;  students failing to attend consecration exercise will not be on list for the commencement exercises- candidates must pay graduation fee regardless if they participate in ceremonies or not.

The Student Council Organization (Society)

The name of this Student Organization shall be:

Student Council Society—SCS

The membership of this organization is made up of all Belize Adventist Junior College registered students both full time and part time. This organization can seek obligations with other societies sharing one common goal to enhance student campus life and academic pursuit. This organization will work along with college staff and administration to secure students’ rights and privileges.

Article 1          Purpose and Objectives of this society

1. To develop personality and leadership among students.

2. Assist in the planning and implementation of social, cultural,

    religious, and sporting activities of the student body.

3. Give opportunity to all students on this campus to create and

    share a good social environment within the student body.

4. Keep student body informed.

5. Plan and execute fund raising events for the purpose of

    improving the college.

6. To encourage and motivate each other to higher standards of

    intellectual achievement through healthy competition, giving

    prizes, and awards.

7. To help in the improvement of spiritual standards

 

Article II          Officers

1. The officers of the council shall be:

President, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, pastor, two vocals, and two teachers serving as sponsors.

2. Student council society officers are elected by the student body, through general elections, called to       order by the Dean.

3. Anyone wishing to become an officer of this society must satisfy the following criteria.

            a. Demonstrate leadership qualities.

            b. Be willing to work with other council members.

            c. Be a respectable member of the student body.

4. Duties of the officers:

            a. The President—Control the supervision of the council, call to order meetings. He is chairman in all the meetings. His duty is to orientate and guide his fellow students to achieve the purposes and goals of the council.

            b. The Vice-President—is to act in the absence of the president, supervise the committee.

            c. The treasurer—responsible to keep a proper financial record. He will disburse funds according to votes taken by the executive SCS committee. He will keep record of each transaction and be able to present receipts and a balance financial statement to the council and administration after each fund raising activity. The treasurer must work closely with the Treasurer of BAJC who is the custodian of all school funds.

            d. The Secretary—shall inform all members of meetings dates, time, and venue, be present at all meetings of the SCS and take minutes of every vote taken and proceedings.

            e. The vocals—shall ensure that the executive follow all the regulations of the council. Carry out duties assigned to them by the committee.

            f. The Pastor—shall assist the president in keeping high spiritual standard among members . He will direct short devotions of each planned meeting, be the spiritual councillor to the society.

            g. The Sponsor—The two sponsors or advisors are staff members and are elected in the following manner, one from the student body in their general elections, the other is nominated by the administration. These two teachers serve as advisors to the student council voicing the policies of the administration or principles of the school.
