SNAPSHOTS OF
REVELATION

THE SCROLL
AND THE LAMB

The opening of the book of the inheritance of humanity now involves Jesus in showing to John the consequences of each person's acceptance or rejection of the Blood of the Lamb.

As John glimpses his first brief view of trouble and tragedy in chapter six he is, no doubt, so stunned by it all that Jesus gives John again, in chapter seven, a view of the great throne room of heaven. John's heart must have been heavy as he saw the opening of the first six seals, and it could have seemed to him that there was little possibility that anyone would be saved. But then, as he sees the great multitude of redeemed people in heaven he discovers that, through the Blood of the Lamb, many will overcome the pressures of evil and receive their purchased inheritance at last.

GROW IN THE WORD

As John sees the opening of the seals he views events of worldwide significance represented firstly by horses and riders.

"The Seals

"6:1) I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, 'Come!' 2) I looked, and there before me was a white horse!"

'White' is used elsewhere in Revelation 18 times and always signifies purity, righteousness, and truth. (See the Mini-Study)

What does 'white' tell you about the first horse?

What have others said?

"Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest." Cross Reference: What did God promise would encircle the earth? Matthew 24:14; Revelation 14:6

What have others said?
"3) When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, 'Come!' 4) Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword." Have you ever known of strife or conflict following the preaching of the Gospel? What happened?

What have others said?
"5) When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, 'Come!' I looked and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand." Black is the opposite of white in Bible prophecy and represents darkness, sorrow and death.

In what ways will a blindness to the truths of Jesus' word result in spiritual famine and starvation?

What have others said?

"6) Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, 'A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!'" 'Oil' represents the Holy Spirit and 'wine' joy. It is vital to be filled with these undamageable riches.
"7) When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, 'Come!' 8) I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beast of the earth." The fourth horse pictures the ultimate depths of spiritual darkness. Those who have been weighed in the balances and found wanting now participate in the corruption of the earth. What would you consider to be some of Satan's corrupting agencies today?

What have others said?
"9) When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they maintained." Remember -- this is highly symbolic language. The martyrs are not literally jammed under the altar in heaven crying out for revenge -- this would be a terrible fate!
"10) They called out in a loud voice, 'How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?'" Cross Reference: Many times in the Psalms the cry goes out "how long" will evil prosper? For example: read Psalm 13.

Have you ever made this same cry? What can help you through in the end?

What have others said?

"11) Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

"12) I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13) and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind."

These signs in the earth, sun, moon and stars are listed more than ten times in scripture in connection to the return of Jesus.

Cross Reference: Follow the sequence of events in Matthew 24:21-31. Does it appear that God's people will be taken up with Jesus before or after these signs in the sun, moon and stars?

What have others said?

"14) The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

"15) Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16) They called to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17) For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?'"

According to Revelation 7:14, what can the blood of Jesus do to the sins that the rocks and mountains can't?

What have others said?

Revelation chapter seven answers this all important question: "Who can Stand?" Will anyone who is alive when Jesus comes be ready to meet Him?

What have others said?

"144,000 Sealed

"7:1) After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree."

'Winds' represent strife and trouble. Can you think of any recent events that show God is holding back the full force of evil today?

What have others said?
"2) Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: 3) 'Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.'" In a later study guide the seal will be seen in contrast to the mark of the beast. Forehead represents the will and character. (See Ezekiel 3:8, 9; 9:4).
"4) Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel." Remember -- John's whole vision of the opening of the seven seals is highly symbolic. In view of this it seems that the 144,000 could symbolize all who are saved alive at the coming of Jesus. The tribes appear to represent various personality types who gain victory in Jesus and are finally saved. The problems are overcome through the power of Jesus.

Cross Reference: Read Genesis 49 and identify the various personality types or problems the tribes may possibly represent. Can you identify with one or more of these personalities or problems?

"5) From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed," Strong Leader
"from the tribe of Reuben 12,000," Unstable
"from the tribe of Gad 12,000," Backslider
"6) from the tribe of Asher 12,000," Appetite/Habit
"from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000," Hasty/Impulsive
"from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000," Popularity
Genesis 48:16
"7) from the tribe of Simeon 12,000," Bad Temper
"from the tribe of Levi 12,000," Cruel Anger
"from the tribe of Issachar 12,000," Workaholic
"8) from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000," Business Person
"from the tribe of Joseph 12,000," Successful
"from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000," Spoiled Child
How is your Christian courage affected by the knowledge that God can save for His kingdom people from all these categories as they accept His grace and victory power?

What have others said?
"The Great Multitude
in White Robes

"9) After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb."

Whereas before John had only heard the symbolic number of those who were saved, here He sees the uncountable great multitude.
"They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands." Cross Reference: When did a great crowd previously greet Jesus with palm branches? John 12:12, 13

What have others said?
"10) And they cried out inn a loud voice:

"'Salvation belongs to our God,
who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb.'

"11) All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12) saying:

"'Amen!
Praise and
glory and
wisdom and
thanks and
honor and
power and
strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!'"

In this great celebration, John sees Jesus -- not going to the cross -- but glorified before all of heaven. Notice the sevenfold song of glory to God -- in what ways can these seven qualities enhance your present prayers?

What have others said?
"13) Then one of the elders asked me, 'These in white robes -- who are they, and where did they come from?'

"14) I answered, 'Sir, you know.'"

Why would you ask someone a question when you know they do not know the answer?

What have others said?
"And he said, 'These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.'" Cross Reference: Is there evidence that all the saved are taken with Jesus to glory at the same time?
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17;
2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

What have others said?
"15) Therefore,

"'they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.
16) Never again will they hunger;
never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat upon them,
nor any scorching heat.
17) For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd;
he will lead them to springs of living water.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'"

Which of these eight promises has the most meaning for you? Why?

What have others said?

Here is a beautiful paradox of prophetic symbolism -- a Lamb is the Shepherd!

John is given a little foretaste of Revelation 21 and 22. Is this foretaste enough to make heaven seem like heaven for you?

Interpreting Prophecy

While this Snapshots of Revelation study guide is primarily concerned with your personal spiritual growth today, it is important to understand some principles of prophetic interpretation.

Just as the seven churches were seen to have an application to people in John's day, so did the messages of the seven seals. As with the seven churches, however, the seven seals reveal striking similarities to successive periods of church history.

The white horse fittingly represent the apostolic purity of the gospel that swept the Roman empire, while the red horse captures the tragedy of persecution that poured upon the believers until the time of the Roman emperor Constantine. Following the acceptance of Christianity by the Roman emperors much of the new religion was mixed with paganism and was exploited for political and commercial purposes. As the pale horse thundered forth, for at least a thousand years the world was gripped by spiritual death with only a few valiant souls upholding the torch of truth. From the middle of the sixteenth century onwards a general cry ascended for judgment and vindication and within one hundred years Bible students observed strange phenomena in the sun, moon, stars, and earth. Concluding this historical interpretation, Bible students today have seen humanity living in an age when the last three verses of Revelation 6 will take place.

Some modern futuristic interpretations of prophecy have speculated that the white horse represents Antichrist and that the other seals picture events during a great time of trouble on the earth after God's people have been secretly taken to heaven.

Clearly, the opening of the seals does have tremendous significance just prior to the second coming of Jesus. Prophecy was not given, however, to enable us to work out intricate details, places and dates of future events, but it was given so we may have confidence and strength in Jesus whatever the future may hold. (For example see John 14:29)

It seems that there are only three lines of prophecy in Revelation open to the possibility of both historical and last-day interpretation, namely, the seven churches, seals, and trumpets. The rest of the prophecies appear, like those in the writings of Daniel, to be anchored in time and place by a defined sequence of events.

Remember this: most Biblical writings are to be understood literally unless the context indicates otherwise, but it is vital to know that prophetic writings, such as we have in Revelation, are to be understood symbolically unless the context clearly shows otherwise. The clues to the meaning of prophetic symbols in Revelation are found in the Scripture. It is important, though, not to get so concerned about detailed interpretation of minutia that the big picture is lost sight of -- Jesus loves you and, although you may be surrounded by the intensity of trial and trouble, if you trust in Him you will be victorious at last.
