PARENTING

My Techie Angel Megan and I were e-talking one day about inclusions to our ANGEL CO-OP site and agreed that probably one of the most overlooked but significant ministries is parenting. The Bible contains a great number of examples of, and references to, parenting, and instructions for carrying out this task.

“Train a child in the way (s)he should go and when (s)he is old (s)he will not turn from it.”

Proverbs 22:6

“Child Guidance: Counsels to Seventh-day Adventist Parents as set forth in the Writings of Ellen G. White” is another source of Biblically-inspired teachings on child-raising.

My training as a parent and as a parent educator (and, at one time, as a Co-ordinator of Parenting programs for Saskatoon), lies chiefly in the field of Adlerian psychology. Alfred Adler MD was a Viennese psychiatrist whose contribution, individual psychology, is the basis for most parenting instruction in North America. The name Alfred Adler is largely unknown because so many of his contributions have been adopted by the masses and are now considered “common sense”.

Adlerian parenting is:

  • Democratic
  • Requires mutual respect
  • Builds healthy loving relationships between parent and child
  • Replaces punishment with consequences and problem-solving
  • Stimulates the development of inner-discipline rather than blind obedience
  • Nurtures the development of children who are co-operative caring and responsible
  • Encourages parents to study in Parenting groups: to offset isolation and to network in the best interests of families

Adler's influence can been seen in the highly esteemed works of best selling authors Barbara Coloroso ("Kids are Worth It"), Steven Covey ("7 Habits of Highly Effective Families") and in the writing of other Adlerians whose books have become international bestsellers such as Dreikurs’ “Children the Challenge”, Don Dinkmeyer’s “S.T.E.P. Parenting”, Jane Nelson’s “Positive Parenting”, and Michael Popkin’s “Active Parenting”. (I highly recommend Michael Popkin’s “Active Christian Parenting” kit (video, leader’s manual) for anyone considering a Christian parenting group. It is designed for parents of children 2-12 with a Christian perspective.)

At the bottom of this page you will find an opportunity to brag, ask questions or generally give some parenting feedback. We will do our best to show your comments on an easily accessible forum (board) right on this page. Check back often!
